Tons of these growing wild in some woods near me.

Looks like a Maple.
Life is not a journey to the grave with the intention of arriving safely in a pretty and well preserved body, but rather to skid in broadside, thoroughly used up, totally worn out, and proclaiming...."WOW What a Ride!!" -Mark Frost

There are four Maples that apparently grow here in Florida but when it comes to leaves, I can never decide one from another. Flowers are a good identifier:

Red Maple (Acer rubrum) -showy red flowers
Sugar Maple (Acer saccharum) - inconspicuous pinkish flowers
Florida Maple (Acer barbatum) - non-showy greenish flowers
Boxelder (Acer negundo) - non showy, greenish-yellow.

Don't know if this helps but from googling, I found info at this page: http://www.sfrc.ufl.edu/Extens...

Acer negundo - leaves light green, pubescent above, paler reverse.

Acer rubrum - leaves, light green above, paler and glabrous reverse; petioles red or reddish-green.

Acer saccharum - leaves pale green above, silvery-grey reverse; petioles red or reddish green.

Acer barbatum - leaves are blue-green.

Take a picture from the side of that seedling, and see if the leaves are actually opposite or alternate along the stem.

That looks a lot more like a Sweetgum seedling (Liquidambar styraciflua) to me, than a Maple of any sort. Sweetgum will have alternate arrangement of leaves, whereas all Maples (Acer sp.) will have opposite arrangement of leaves.

Good eye John! I hadn't even thought of Sweet Gum (Liquidambar styraciflua) seedlings and Sweetgum is found all the way south to the Central Florida area. My mother in law had a few growing in her yard over near Orlando ... no fun stepping on those spiny pods in bare feet! Smiling

I zoomed in & to me, it looks like the leaves are opposite BUT I still will confirm when I go back next week. I was in a rush yesterday but there were tons of these babies everywhere & I did not see any of those spiny seed pods. I have lived where there were Sweetgum trees & those pods are all over the place & unmistakable.
Still --- need to be sure so will check it out.

It may be too early in the year to see the spiny pods on the ground.

I was unable to get any photos today. It was pouring down rain, the frog strangling kind. Will have to do it when I go back in 3 weeks.

If there are tons of them (and you have good wet soil from frog-strangling rains) then pull up a couple or three - and then photo them back home in warm bright environs where you can see them from many angles.

Lots easier than balancing on one foot in the wild...

Unless we get more of that same rain in 3 weeks, I will be able to get pictures & hopefully plants when I go back to get my crown set. It's on my list!

Being picky, shouldn't the ID plant be removed from Acer barbatum in the database until it is identified? It would not appear to be A. barbatum in any case, because the leaf margins on the ID plant are toothed whereas in A. barbatum they are entire (smooth).

Sure, it really should be Sue. I would appreciate it if you would do that for me. I happen to be flat on my back in bed with back pain that is raging so I won't be getting to my computer. It's really difficult to do with my phone so if you would take care of that I would greatly appreciate it. Thank you.

So sorry about your back pain Ann, that's certainly no fun. I'd be happy to fix it for you but I'm not sure how to go about it, I don't venture into the database much. Can someone else help or tell me what to do?
