Hello all!
I planted my first potatoes (baby reds) in a large plastic pot and man have they taken off! I planted them in early feb, and live in zone 8.....how and when do I harvest them? I have read many different ways, but want to get a better knowledge before I go in there and they aren't really ready. Here is a picture taken a few days ago to give you an idea.

Hi sarakay13
I'm in zone 4b, not ready to plant potatoes yet, but your potato plants are beautiful.
Harvesting potatoes is fun! You will wait until 2 weeks after bloom and wait for the blossoms to have dropped off the plant - that is when the new potatoes are forming below the soil surface. Do you want to harvest small new potatoes or mature finished potatoes? If you want to wait for the large potatoes, then wait for the plant to yellow & die back.
Either way, you'll probably say 'I need to grow more potatoes next time!'

What daughter and I did...we had potatoes planted in a pot. As they grew we knew we needed to 'hill them up'. How to do that in a pot? I took a cheap nursery pot the same size, cut off the bottom of the pot and set it on the pot where the potatoes were growing and added more soil. We did this one more time so there would be a better chance for lots of potatoes.
