I rarely lose daylilies following a tough winter. I did not lose any this year, but SPACECOAST FREAKY TIKI took a beating. It went from 6 fans last fall to 2 fans this spring. So I just sent it south to a customer in Florida. I wish I could be sent South during the winter, but my wife, kids and job keep me in NY.

Some of my plants I suspect will not flower this year though as a result of the winter being so long and harsh as our growing season is already very short but as long as the plants themselves survive I shall be patient.

Wow, you've actually made me feel better about our Ohio summers! I spend so much time envying those in the southern states for their longer/year-round daylily season, I forgot that my shorter season could be worse. Thanks for that!

Winters are always long and harsh here in Zone 4 and the daylilies always still bloom so don't give up hope. The scapes, on many daylilies at least, start the year before. Daylilies are only just emerging after winter here and should flower mainly in July, some late June. Some are not even up yet.

The big difference between here and the UK is the growing season (other than the winters being milder). The UK is further north than where I am in Canada so the light intensity is lower in summer and the average temperatures also lower, but the days in summer are longer which may compensate to some extent. I remember as a kid there having trouble getting to sleep on school nights because it was light so late in the summer evenings!

All but one of my daylilies are putting up growth, even my two sluggish starters. The one I may have lost is Heavenly Black Bird, which surprises me - it's from a Northern hybridizer and was planted in the spring, so had all year to settle in before winter came. All my fall planted daylilies are back and all my evergreens too. I guess time will tell.

I think one thing we all need to remember is that some hybridizers label all of their plants SEV. It's lazy and not always accurate. For instance, Cimarron Rose is listed as a SEV and it's a rock solid EV in my garden. Not all SEV's are hardy and not all EV's are tender. Really, really confusing, isn't it???

I agree Arlene. @LarryR has a list on his website showing what evergreens survive in the North. I always check before I buy, but for some reason the southern hybridizers seem to want to send me evergreens as bonus plants!

It may also be because evergreens are what southern hybridizers mostly grow Smiling

Sue, that is one big list of winter losses. So sorry, I am happy to report that some of mine that I had given up for dead has sent up a single fan! I had read on here , to not disturb the plant. I had already emptied some pots because they seemed mushy. Some are in pots and others are in beds.

I'm still waiting on my possible goners to show up. I only have hope really for one since the growing fan was knocked off by an animal. Been weeding the others but no sign of anything. I'll wait until July like it was suggested but I'm not holding my breath.
