Hello, I am new here! We mived across the country to SW Virginia in August. I have never lived in this area and need advice for our yard. I am admittedly terrible at landscaping design, so I am hoping someone can help me out.

Our soil is both sandy and has a lot of clay. It has a hard time growing grass. I am including a picture below. We want to put a small chicken coop in the area indicated, but want to plant things around it to make it look nicer. I want something like flowering shrubs, or something that will also look good in the winter. Any ideas? (Oh and the chickens will stay in a coop and run, so will not have access to the plants)
The area is on a downward slope, and there is currently moss growing there.

Beautiful area you're living in. Wish I could be of more help here but you've definitely come to the right place to search for help. Welcome! to NGA!

Edit to add that in the tools and apps drop down tool you'll find a zone look up. You're in 6a-7a pending your exact area of SW VA. This will help some for selecting things that grow well in your area. Also, check in with you local County Extensions office. They are great for useful info and things that do well in an area. Lastly, good luck with your landscaping and gardening plans.

Sorry I didn't get back right away...we had a lot going on.

It is both sunny and shady in that area. I did check with the extension office about which plants are hardy in this zone, but I am hopeless at landscaping. Lol.
