I live in northwest Alabama and it is spring time here. I am starting to see this plant in my yard and I am trying to figure out what it is. I "think" that it is called "field madder" or Sherardia.

The stem that goes out to the flowers is square in cross section. When I pull this out of the ground, it has a single tap root. The plant grows pretty low to the ground.

Thanks

Compare to Sherardia arvensis (or other species of Sherardia):

I have never seen this ground cover but it's adorable. Must learn more.
