I kill Bougainvillea's. I think it was that I put it in the shade. I have seen huge Bougainvillea at other people's houses. I used to live in Livermore, CA and it was hot but no wind. Can I put it in a large pot in the full sun, how would that do? Any tips or ideas? I really want one. My back yard is a big shaded area with a large pool so I am back to the front. I've lived here three years and Iam really going strong on my front yard this year. I wonder if going up a water spout to the roof would be ok. Or if it would pull the water spout down. That would be bad. Still seeing beautiful houses with bougainvillea in the city of Tracy, CA 9a. Don't have a trellis yet as we have cars not trucks. Hmmm that might be a problem with a large container as well. Where there is a will there is a way lol. I think 🤔 Mindi |

Mindi, Here are some examples of potted Bougainvillas across the street from me![]() ![]() ![]() These are East facing, so get full sun till noon. She has a couple more smaller ones, but you get the idea. They do need good support to climb on...strudy enough to withstand strong winds....and they're not easily portable ![]() |

Hi there!! Thank you for the pictures!! And the info. Yeah I have a big rose bush out front and it gets blown halfway over every afternoon so it would have to be protected. And I need my husband to build me a trellis!! Without a trellis I couldn't do it. I have some spots in the backyard where I could put it. While writing this I just remembered the perfect spot. Full blazing sun though but protected from the wind due to all the fences. Full sun all day long. Would that be a problem do you think?? 🤔 Mindi |

That would be perfect! Not sure what your weather is there, but you do know they can't take much frost, right? They do love the sun, and don't need much water, so good drainage is a must. |

Bougainvilla would have no problems in Tracy. In Oakdale countryside (Zone 8b), I grew dwarf versions in pots so I could take them in every winter. My BFF lives downtown (Zone 9a) and has a HUGE one on the front of her house - it has been there forever (30 years or so). It faces south. That is encouraging!! Our weather is mild winters but sizzling summers. Always windy. |

I understand - Oakdale and Tracy are not that far apart. ![]() Just remember how big a Bougainvilla will get. Luckily, they take well to pruning. I love bougainvillea in pots, on ground they can get too big without pruning here in tropics, and with regular pruning they get too leafy with few flowers. So, potting is best for me, this is in front yard, ful sun. they are quite drought tolerant in tropic, I assume. You can also graft multiple cultivar, and some variegated will brighten the scheme when not in blooms |

Wow tofitropic!! That is absolutely beautiful!!! Thank you for showing me such an awesome bougainvillea!!! Motivates me to try a pot!! I don't really know how to do it like you have but that is breathtaking!! Mindi |
