I'm asking for help to identify unusual growth on my irises.

I've noticed this year that many of my irises have have a "leaf" that developed on the distal end of the bloom stalk around the bud. I've never seen this happen before.

We had a colder and wetter winter than usual, could this have contributed to this occurring?

Thanks ahead, and I look forward to hearing your thoughts about this.

Annette

Hello Annette,

This is normal. The number of flower sockets and how high up the stalks they occur varies depending on which variety you have. I don't think your stalks have reached full height yet so these top leaves look more prominent at the moment.

I've seen this from time to time Annette, I don't think it's anything to be concerned about. I think Robin is right, a normal occurrence that may be more prominent some years than others.

Good to see you on the Iris forum! Hang around and soon these folks will be seducing you into lots of new varieties for your new garden! Hilarious!

Welcome Annette
Good advice from Robin. Normal "oddities" so to speak.
Do stick around; you will be tempted to add lots of irises to your gardens.

Thank you all for the input about the leaves, and the welcome, I greatly appreciate both!

I'm glad that this is a normal variant, I had not seen the stalks present this way before.

It won't take much to get me addicted, I love irises. Here are a few blooms from the garden this week.

Sneezy is a beauty! I bet that would look great with some of the peachy, muted colored Itoh peonies!
