I was told this is a ficus but I'm not sure of the variety. Help is appreciated!

It looks like Ficus elastica. Just plain old rubber plant.

I believes that is F. microcarpa, small leaves, but thick, great for bonsai subject.
one of my fav ficus, (happens to be) having one sitting on my office desk this month....

I would suggest that the ficus in question (bholler's) would fit in F microcarpa var. crassifolia, most likely Ficus 'Green Mound' (thick leaves, bit elongated, blunt but pointed tip.)
The one on my picture is a seedling grow from seed of unknown plant, there are green mound as well as green island in the garden. it's habbit is in between both so I keep it.

Overall shape/ leaf shape /Buds etc don't look right for Ficus elastica.
