I recently visited Cornell College (in New York, this April) and saw a strange seed pod on the ground. It was about the size of my hand--12-ish cm long and 6-ish cm wide at its widest part, was flat and bumpy, and was pear shaped. Inside was some dried, good smelling green stuff (probably dried fruit) and a seed. The seed is about 2 cm across, is very round, black/ slightly brown, and is 1 cm tall. What type of plant/seed is this? I've looked everywhere and still haven't found anything yet, help!

Did it look anything like the pod pictured here? https://www.bing.com/images/se... That's the seedpod of the Kentucky Coffeetree (Gymnocladus dioicus) which is found in parts of N.Y. state.

One more question, do you know how long it will take before these trees can produce seeds?
