Hello all.

I am working on a peat free general potting mix for plants in my nursery and would very much like some input.

It is 6 parts sterilised loam,
3 parts garden compost (bought commercially )
1.5 parts bark and 1 part coarse sand
With a John Innes blend of fertilisers

Only recently added sand as noticed drainage issues.

Welcome!

Your formula has 11.5 parts. Smiling

Sand doesn't aid drainage, in fact may impair drainage. Maybe perlite instead?

You won't know how welll it works until you try it.

Is this mix for indoor or outdoor use? What is the source and composition of the loam? How is it sterilized? Are you a professional grower or hobbyist?

Daisyl - I forgot to mention equal parts blood sweat and tears as well.

WillC - Professional, first year running, previously nursery assistant. Loam is dug out on site and placed in small soil steriliser which heats soil to 86.6 degrees C. Mainly for outdoor plants, but we also do a small number of indoor plants.

If you are working professionally, I suggest you get some information from local professionals in your area, not here.
