Hello and thanks for the membership this is my first post.
I am looking for a low growing shrub, 3-4 feet tall that is branchy so that it can accommodate perching for birds. I want to plant in front of my garden shed. As mentioned earlier, not too tall with a spread of 5-6 feet side to side. To maximize on space I'd like to plant as close to the shed as possible. I really like red stem dogwood but I read that it grows pretty big.
Finally, I live in Montréal Québec in zone 5.
Thanks

Hi @Mudkicker99 and welcome to the NGA forums.

How about Forsythia

Butterfly Bush

Or, Burning Bush to name a few....

All three can have their height kept in check by trimming. You might need more than 1 to have it stretch 5-6 feet side to side. I have all three on my property. They are not only nice shrubs, the birds like to use them, especially for a sense of protection.

Thanks for the reply. I like the first one, which variety of that species would you recommend?

Whatever your local nursery sells. They will have a variety that does well in your area.
