Hey so I'm new to growing carnations but I went to the garden store and bought some red carnation seeds and started growing one inside to see how it looked before I dedicate a section of my garden for them, but once it started to bloom flowers I noticed that it wasn't red at all, it was a bright purple color. So my question is, was the package mislabeled or is it a genetic mutation or is it something that I am doing to cause it to be purple instead of red and do you think all the seeds will make purple flowers or are some going to be red and some purple and/or various other colors?

Unfortunately that's not a carnation, not even close, looks like some wild flower, not sure what it is. I'll move this over to the Plant ID Forum.

Do you think it is an annual or perennial? And is it common to have seed packages be mislabeled and produce different plants than they are supposed to?

If you click on the Larkspur link, the database says it's an annual.
And no, it's not common to have mislabeled seed packages.

The larkspur seed may have been in the soil, not the seed pack.

That's what I was thinking. Ferry-Morse is a well known seed company. Any more seeds sprout?

No I haven't noticed any more sprouts but I just planted a couple more seeds to see what kind of plant grows, and from what I've been reading delphiniums tend to be perennials and larkspur tend to be annuals. So is this a delphinium or a larkspur?

Maybe post a photo of the seed from your pack here for those familiar with these seed to ID.
Blinking It has been many years but I am remembering Carnation seed as flat papery like and Larkspur as triangular shaped.

So what is the difference between delphiniums and larkspur? Are there physical differences between the two that makes them easy to tell apart?
