Spiraea japonica var. albiflora and Spiraea japonica are listed as the same plant. One has a pink flower and the other a white flower http://www.missouribotanicalga... http://www.missouribotanicalga... |
Hi Frank, That's because var. albiflora is regarded as a synonym: http://www.catalogueoflife.org... Typically the white form (alba/album or occasionally albiflora) of a plant is the result of one or two alleles being different from the regular-coloured form (i.e. it is a minor difference that results in the inability to produce a certain pigment). It is no longer considered sufficiently different to warrant a distinct taxon.
