I'm always pretty hesitant to give "bad" reviews to any vendor, even after I've had "experiences" with their customer service. I would much rather give GOOD reviews to those vendors who deserve it....just the way I'm wired, I guess Shrug! ....and I've found that the "sub standard" places usually don't stay in business very long !

I've only received the wrong iris once. I ordered Dutch Iris Silvery Beauty and received a blue dutch iris mix. The vendor was happy to send the correct iris again after the next flowering season at their expense. My second batch of Silvery Beauty was another blue mix. I thought they would have tagged the correct plant while it was in flower to avoid sending the wrong plant a second time. I didn't tell them about the second mistake.

If a vendor makes a mistake and does not return calls or make an effort to rectify it, I think it's ok to name them to warn other potential customers.

On the old Dave's garden they have the Garden Watch Dog, where people post their evaluations of vendors.

What do you do when you have a bad experience but everyone else seems happy with a vendor? Do you consider your bad experience as just a series of unfortunate events?

Maybe just bring it up as a question. Has anyone else experienced X, Y, or Z? I do not know really. Sometimes I do think one's experience is just a series of unfortunate events and not worth bringing up. I would not have called out Blue J here if someone else had not done it first. Once someone did mention it, I jumped on the bandwagon (ouch, that does not seem like such a good thing). And I do think the problem with Blue J is bad if others are having the same experience. I am not sure what the best and most ethical approach is here. There was as feature piece last year in The NY Times about an writer who began to suspect that one of the reviewers on Good Reads was a troll ... it turned out she was correct. I belong to LibraryThing. Our solution to the problem of trolls has been to set up a private invitation-only group of people with whom we have interacted extensively on open forums. But here, a closed forum (if such a thing exists) would defeat the purpose.

Let's just say that I think some sticky questions have been raised here to which I do not have a good answer.

That said, I suspect my Iris 'Sweetheart Rings' is a bad actor. She bullies the other iris and keeps encroaching on their rhizome space.

Yes, and there was a deliberate decision made when the https://garden.org/greenpages/ were created here to focus on recommendations rather than reviews (good, bad, or indifferent) in the hopes of maintaining a more positive tone throughout the site.

Kent ~ You have made an excellent point! I suppose that the negative reviews can go to the Garden Watchdog. I like the positive atmosphere here, and I do appreciate all those who participate in friendly discourse.

Richard ~ I also appreciate that you wanted to save members from wasting their time and money on vendors that do not have time for their customers. Keep trying to resolve your issues with the vendors.

Arlyn ~ If only certain vendors would go out of business quickly, those who provide less than stellar customer service. Breck's has been around for a very long time. I don't know how long the other two that were mentioned have been in business.

I did make a purchase with Blue J last year and I had mixed results. Yes, the roots were very small, not enough to support them in the ground, so I staked them. I did lose one due to tiny-sized rhizome. And I have yet to discover if all the rhizomes will be true to their names. Also, they were very generous and sent me quite a few bonuses. Any differences that I have with them, I will try and resolve it first before giving them a review on the Garden Watchdog.

mmmmm.... I will add that my issues from this vendor, and this is not a major vendor, were not answering my many gentle emails until i suggested i cancel the order and get a refund then receiving my order almost two months after it was promised (excuse was they were tired, needed a break from the garden, went on vacation, etc. :blinking:)

I received a box that reeked of rot when opened. Two mushy ones were immediately put in plastic bags and into the garbage. Two others rotted within two weeks of planting despite being treated on arrival.

I did NOT at that point email this individual about my issues. I will not deal with this individual ever about anything. I cut my losses. OK.

If others have a problem with this vendor I have not heard of it. But I feel guilty for not telling on them. I really hope i never do hear of anyone on this site being unhappy with them or i will feel VERY guilty.

..... conflicted.

So do we have a way to private message people on this forum? If we do, I could merely post a query—for example "I am thinking of ordering iris from this company. Does anyone here have advice?" Then others could send a message privately if they had strong feelings one way or the other.

One reason that we also have the "vendors" thread, here on the iris forum....for folks to recommend places that they feel are "good" ! One of the reasons I dislike "negative" comments about vendors is my BAD experience MAY be one out of a thousand GOOD experiences, by others.....Maybe I caught them on a "bad day", or, maybe I was having a "bad day"...or even both of us, at the same time ! I still feel that, if I had a GOOD experience....first, I tell the vendor, then, I tell my friends, and, If it was a "not so good " experience...first, I tell the vendor.....and if it REAINS a bad experience....I withhold both my future business, and my recommendations to others.

In my opinion, places like "Breck's"....mentioned above....are not really "iris vendors"...sure, they sell irises....they buy job lots of rhizomes from some grower...usually in Europe....that are shipped in, repacked, and then sent out to you....they, in effect, just "big box stores " for plants....not doing much..if any...actual "growing"....just buying and selling. And places like "Blue J"...also mentioned above....actually grow the rhizomes they sell, and do the planting, digging, shipping....the whole thing...themselves. And, putting myself in "their shoes"....say, digging, dividing, cleaning, packing, and shipping out 60, or so, clumps from one bed....to send to plant sales and iris buddies, as I did last year, brings home the fact that, try as one might, mistakes happen, and nerves tend to "fray". Now Imagine sending out a thousand...or , two or three thousand...orders, over a very short time span, dealing with folks who want to "add to", or "delete from" their order. I'll bet THEIR nerves get a bit "frayed", too ! But, all that doesn't excuse being "rude", or, refusing to return e-mails, or tending to complaints......that's why...if they ARE rude, or...."unhelpful"......I don't recommend them to my "iris buddies", but DO let them know that, "I won't be back" Shrug!

The funny thing about this, is that I had never heard of Blue J until someone on this forum recommended them to me, to get a certain iris.

I am not faulting the member in the least, and I will wait until all have bloomed to contact them. I will take it from there.

Kent ~ Please forgive me if I contributed to any negativity on this website. It was not my intention in the least.

I commend you and the rest of Dave's team in keeping this a friendly, cheerful site, all the while being extremely informative. I know that you make a lot of effort to keep things accurate and I really like the positive atmosphere here.

There is enough of the other in this world that here is a place that we can go to learn, have fun and make new friends.

I probably should keep my two cents worth to myself, because it is not worth two cents, and remember that this is just my take on things, but In reading Richard's post about his bad experience I do not think he took offense at a 'bad day' but was not treated well during the overall transaction. I guess it is a personal decision whether we tell our fellow iris buyers to beware or just let them find out for themselves. I hope all have great buying experiences.

This is a friendly, cheerful site as Evelyn stated but if we never discuss anything but friendly cheerful subjects that is not real gardening. I think part of a positive atmosphere is for me to support my fellow growers, encourage them in their gardening efforts and warn them of possible 'pot holes' before they step in them.

Most of the vendors, both large and small, are wonderful to deal with. They are patient, generous and communicate well with their customers. I would never want to hurt anyone or any business that is struggling or in a bad situation. But if a company, for any reason, has accepted payment and cannot deliver what they agreed to, they do need to communicate that to me and work with me. When i look at a public website, or when a small vendor emails me a 'catalog', and I place an order using the form provided and make a valid payment in full, we have a binding contract. Due to the nature of plants, weather and nature in general they may not be able to complete their end of the agreement. They should at that point contact me and give me fair options that do not cost me more money and offer a refund if i so wish. That is acceptable. Vendors that do not send anything, will not answer inquiries, send diseased plants only when you ask to cancel are not worthy of this sites business.

This is the National Gardening Association, we are members, we are buyers from plant vendors, we should have a voice not only when the experience is more than perfect but when it falls far short of acceptable.

.... just my two cents worth.

The truth always wins! I just hope "they" do not censor this thread because of it. As long as posts are fair and in good taste I fail to see a problem. And I would hope management would have the good sense to realize that.
