The NGA app runs terribly slow when I'm typing a message/comment, etc. What happens is that it lags behind severely, in showing the characters as I type, so typing is very, very choppy. ![]() ![]() ![]() The issue is not our wireless router bc it works just fine on my laptop and PC, but in addition, it's even worse when I'm on roaming data, and no other app on my phone behaves this way, no matter the connection type, so it can't be a carrier issue. My phone is an Android, so was the NGA app originally developed for iPhones only and not adjusted for Androids? I'm no developer, but can something be done about this? Does anybody else with the Android OS have this same issue? ![]() ![]() "The heart is happiest when the head and the hand work together" ~ Jay Leno (I think) |
Hi Dana, There isn't an app; I assume you mean the NGA website in your browser on your phone? Which browser are using? The default Android browser (if so, do you know which version of Android you are using)? Firefox? Chrome? I have no issues using the site in Firefox on my multiple Android devices. Another possibility is the browser addons, if you have any installed (Chrome and Firefox both allow for addons/plugins/extensions to be used on their Android apps). Happy to try to help you debug the problem. Ahhhh! Here is some info, that I've found, which I think is safe to give you on a public forum.... My phone is an LG-k450 Hardware version Rev.1.0 Software Info: Android version 6.0.1 Kernel version 3.10.49 Software version k45012d Thinking it through......the browser is Google Chrome, and when I'm on any other full website, and they seem to run just fine. As far as add-ons, plug-ins and extensions, I couldn't tell you bc I have no idea where to find that info. "The heart is happiest when the head and the hand work together" ~ Jay Leno (I think) |

Use Firefox on my iPhone with no problems. Prudence, indeed, will dictate that Governments long established should not be changed for light and transient causes; and accordingly all experience hath shewn, that mankind are more disposed to suffer, while evils are sufferable, than to right themselves by abolishing the forms to which they are accustomed. |

It never occured to me that one would NEED to install a different browser on their cell phone, for cripes sakes ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() Perhaps a pop-up, suggesting to new members when creating their account, to install Firefox on mobile phones/devices, for a better browsing experience, on the NGA, may be something to think about? Just a thought... ![]() "The heart is happiest when the head and the hand work together" ~ Jay Leno (I think) |
Thanks for the info, Dana. I'm glad to hear that installing Firefox has resolved the issues. Multiple browsers are a part of life for me (as an engineer and web developer). Unfortunately it's not as simple as "it's an expensive phone, it should work" - often the cost is associated with the hardware and the modifications the manufacturer has made to the operating system and default apps (at present a lot of development tends to go into the camera and camera apps, for example). Each of the browsers (Chrome, Firefox, Edge) uses a different rendering engine. That means that each browser interprets the code that makes up web pages slightly differently (despite there being attempts to standardise everything, we're not quite there yet). It was only a few years ago that I still had to contend with clients using Internet Explorer 7 and 8 (which are horribly broken by today's web standards) and company Intranet sites (internal websites) were "Designed for IE8". You may even find that the next update to Chrome (usually every few months) solves the problem. Sometimes bugs sneak through in Chrome and Firefox and adversely affect a small percentage of websites (over my time as a developer there have been periods where both browsers have independently had bugs that affected the sites I was working on). Without spending time debugging it, it's difficult to say whether the issue is with the browser or the NGA site (and even then it might not be the NGA site itself, but one of the external advertising scripts). I also don't have access to your device or the NGA source code ( @dave is the site admin and web designer), so I would not be able to fully investigate. The possibility still exists that the issue is being caused by an addon in Chrome, too - your new Firefox installation probably doesn't have any addons installed yet. Thank you Joshua. It's starting to exhibit the same issue on Firefox, but not nearly as bad as on Chrome!![]() "The heart is happiest when the head and the hand work together" ~ Jay Leno (I think) |

I have Safari, Chrome and Firefox on my iphone and use them all. Some times a hard reset of your phone can alleviate some of your problems. Are you able to check how much free space you have on your phone? You can generally find out via the Settings app, then Storage (I don't have an Android 6 device at present, so I don't know if the Storage section is underneath "General" or "Device" on Android 6; it's under "General" on Android 5 and in the main Settings list on Android 8). Do you mean a factory reset, or a full power cycle? A factory reset will wipe all the apps, photos and user data. I'd advise against this without taking a backup first. On Android it is possible to clear the app cache, however, which can sometimes resolve these issues. As well as clearing the cache, some places I looked at for Android keyboard lagging said to look at the power saving settings because battery saving can slow down typing on the phone, and also look at keyboard settings (or try changing keyboards. I'm finding the last few days that some ads seem to be causing scrolling difficulties, the screen starts "stuttering", not sure of a better word, when I scroll. It's doing it on this page now, but that's another issue and not to hijack this thread. I actually cannot scroll up because the screen keeps bouncing back to where the ad is! |
It sounds like the advertising Javascript might be causing the browser on your device to lag. Mobile phones usually have much less RAM and CPU resources than laptops or desktop computers. Are you able to describe which ad it is? If possible, are you able to turn off ads in your NGA account profile (only available if you've contributed to the database)? @dave, can you take a look? Hi Joshua, on an apple they talk about a hard reset which is really a soft reset(full Power Cycle) vs a master reset via the settings page. Prudence, indeed, will dictate that Governments long established should not be changed for light and transient causes; and accordingly all experience hath shewn, that mankind are more disposed to suffer, while evils are sufferable, than to right themselves by abolishing the forms to which they are accustomed. |

Joshua, I'm on an iPad Air when the ad "bouncing" occurs. I'm trying to remember the ad but it wasn't just one I don't think. Pretty sure one was RBC (Royal Bank of Canada). I can't turn off ads as we don't get any credit for posting in forums which is mostly what I do, only occasionally contributing to the database. |
Thanks Sue. If you're using an iPad, I assume you're using Safari, then. There have been reports in the past of certain ads causing issues, so your particular case is likely one of them (as it's unlikely that Safari on the iPad has dodgy addons - Apple tends to have a much more restricted ecosystem than Google Chrome or Mozilla Firefox). To vere back to my original issue, of typing, and not scrolling, really, clearing cache and memory hadn't helped, with Chrome. ![]() I only did a reboot....I knew better than to do a reset of any kind, and the reboot helped with Firefox. ![]() Using the Firefox browser, ILO Google Chrome, has solved my issue! ![]() ![]() ![]() Hopefully this thread will help others with my particular issue! ![]() "The heart is happiest when the head and the hand work together" ~ Jay Leno (I think) |
