My friend is 5'4...the bloom spike originates from the plant above her head and was draped on the ground by almost another foot!
This palm (?) was deadly, and huge! The incredibly long, sharp spikes were not only at the base of the 'fronds/leaves, but also all along the center 'spines' on the back of the leaves and could quickly pierce a thumb, rendering it tingling and slightly numb for a few minutes!
I have never seen this color in nature and was awestruck!
Name: Big Bill Livonia Michigan (Zone 6a) GROW ORCHIDS!!!
Wow, what a great trip that must have been! I looked at each and every image as there is so much to enjoy!
Thank you so much for sharing those fabulous images from your visit!
What a beautiful show! Selby does such neat displays and I loved that Drynaria too. I have never heard of or seen that one before. Thanks Patty
I believe one of the Smithsonian museums, the Hirschorn I think, did something similar to the white cubes this past year but the openings were all different sizes and shapes and and they each had an orchid in them.
Minds are like parachutes; they work better when they are open.
