I was supposed to get Fine Drop as a door prize this July, but apparently it did not increase for the person growing our club's door prizes. Sad

Lots of beauties to choose from. Oil Painting bloomed heavily, lots of stalks and great bud count and branching. Bravery was just elegant. Poster Girl was lovely and a pleasure to look at across the garden. The colors of Tuscan Summer seemed extra rich this year and made it stand out. Brouhaha remains a favorite, uniquely colored. My Beloved is a pristine beauty as is Beauty Within. I could go on and on......

Paul ~ When you have so many that you really love, it is impossible to pick a favorite!

Any new favorites?

superbly formed with great size and substance -- yeah, its PURPLE ...... but its enough out of the ordinary to impress me. Good increaser to so plenty for trading Smiling

Timothy ~ You are right! That is a pretty purple iris. Could you add that one to my order? I need to ditch a few other purples in its place.

Now that Thornbird has finished blooming, I have a new favorite.
Chasing Rainbows
Been Hager 1998
Honorable Mention 2000
Award of Merit 2002

The reason that this is my "new favorite", is due to it's substantial blooms and beautiful blending colors. It has 4 buds per socket and is well branched on strong stems. This is a first years' growth! I can't imagine what it will do next year!

I have had 'Chasing Rainbows' for two years now. Thus far it has not bloomed. It just hangs out in the garden. Time for that darn iris to earn its spot in the garden.

Jane and Mary ~ I didn't realize that Chasing Rainbows was so finicky. I hope that you get blooms next year.

I had no idea. Maybe it will never bloom for me again! Who knows?

Barbara didn't get any blooms either. Hmmmm....

Since this was my first year with it, it was such a nice surprise. If it only blooms once in a while, then it will not be a favorite and I have no intention of coddling it. I guess the answers will come in the next couple of years.

Thank you for the "heads up"!

I wonder why finicky bloomers continue to be offered in catalogs. I realize that the degree of finickiness may be a function of local climate and soil conditions. But still ...

And I am curious. Apart from agapanthus, irises are the only flowers I grow that may put up nealthy foliage every year but refuse to bloom. I wonder if that trait could be located and identified via DNA testing.

It is also interesting that irises and hellebores for example do not bloom true to seed. I wonder what that is all about. Are there irises that bloom true to seed? Species iris?

We need a database for finicky bloomers.

Mary ~ Like you said, finicky may be a climate thing, and weather related. The weather has been so erratic that many of my irises had deformed leaves, and many did not bloom. But of course, I am talking about first year irises. My Harvest of Memories does a "snake dance", that is the stalks are curvy and wavy, but eventually straighten up. That is the only one that does that trick. I even bought a new rhizome to compare. They were in different beds and even though the new one bloomed short, they both did the "snake dance"! The year before last, it rained a lot just before bloom time and Harvest of Memories was "lying down on the job"! That is, it was blooming, but lying down!
I had never seen that in a iris before.

Now I don't know about Awesome Alex. Several blooms were chimeras. No standards, 4 falls, then the next bloom would be normal. One had one tiny bloom with one standard and one fall!...
