My Bartzella is exploded with blooms this year. This bush is another bush planted 3 years ago from a division from the mother plant under the peach tree.

I have had great blooms and performance from itohs this year that I believe is a result from the excessive moisture and rain that they received in the 2 months prior to blooms. Due to this observation, I think I will water my itoh peonies more in the coming years if it happens to be drier than usual to encourage blooms.

That is what I've noticed, we had a tough winter, with the big snowstorm in April, lots of moisture. This year I've noticed I have more peony buds than ever before!

The key to watering is the phrase "if it is an unusually dry year." I have killed more peonies through over watering in the spring than I care to think about. But I learned and put it off til they show growth, and then very little watering.
