I was weeding in some backyard planting beds earlier today and I noticed this Kalanchoe sprouting in a container with my Pencil Tree. I'm thinking it might be Mother of Thousands (Kalanchoe daigremontiana) but I just don't know Kalanchoe well enough to be certain. I'm enclosing a photo of the little seedling plant and also a shot of the reverse side of the leaves:

Lin, I have to ask.... Do you want a specific ID so you know what you are pulling up? Smiling

LOL, I already pulled it out of the container with the Pencil Tree and planted it into a tiny pot of it's own but yeah, if possible I'd like to find out the species so I can properly label my plant file/folder. Green Grin!

It looks like x houghtonii to me. The leaves are not wide enough for daigremontiana. But at that young size, it's hard to be 100% sure.

@purpleinopp Tiffany, Hurray! Thank You!

I'm certain that you are right and it's Mother of Thousands (Kalanchoe 'Houghtonii') I've seen it around the area many times over the years but totally forgot the name and I even have pic's in the database. D'Oh!

Happy to suggest. You probably get the heebie jeebies when you see these mother-of Kalanchoes. Even after this past harsh winter, there are babies still alive in my yard.

Yeah, a few species of Kalanchoe sure are pests! I'm not sure about the invasive tendencies of K. Houghtonii but I bet it could easily and quickly take over an area here in the south. K. daigremontiana is listed as an invasive here in Florida.

I think any of the species (or hybrids, as the case may be) that make leaf-edge babies would be a formidable pest where you are. Anything so easy to pull up doesn't really scare me though. I'll take pulling 1000 kal babies over 100 oak sprouts any day! ...which would mean digging 100 little holes. Otherwise, they just break & keep growing.

Me too!! Actually, I'll take 1,000,000 Kalanchoe seedlings over Asparagus Fern (Asparagus densiflorus 'Sprengeri') and Southern Sword Fern (Nephrolepis cordifolia) and Arrowhead Plant (Syngonium podophyllum) which all could probably take over the world! Blinking
