Found in back yard in upstate NY. Flower is about the size of a quarter. There were about 5 of them all close together.

Hi t1010j, Welcome!

Your lovely plant looks like the native Herb Robert (Geranium robertianum)

At first I thought it looked like Herb Robert but the plant needing an ID looks to have 6 petals and Herb Robert only has 5. Maybe some other type of wild geranium?

Hmm, I didn't even notice that. My first thought was Geranium maculatum but that didn't look right; I've looked through the database at bunches of geraniums but haven't yet found any that seem to match. Confused

I'm sure someone will recognize it soon and will be able to offer an ID.

The foliage looks right for herb Robert. If the foliage stinks, that's what it is.

t1010j, did you by any chance take more than one photo of this plant?

I think your ID is correct. I didn't post this other picture because it's blurry but you can see that the other flowers have only 5 petals. Thanks!
