I germinate mine inside a folded wet paper towel , inside a ziploc bag or plastic container and when they sprout , plant them into a 3 inch pot or directly in the ground.

If you are planing to keep them in pots only two or three plants per 3 or 5 gallon pot , they do get bigger and fuller growing in the ground / garden bed though.

I'm not familiar with growing Butterfly Milkweed (Asclepias tuberosa) from seed but according to information in our database (the blue link above) the seeds need to be stratified at 40ยบ for one month and germination takes between 30 - 120 days.

I read at one website that seeds can be directly sown in the ground in fall, for spring sprouting or they can be done with the cold stratification indoors during winter for planting out in the spring.

they do not need any cold stratification , Swamp milkweed and other maybe yes ,
but Butterfly milkweed do not need light or cold period to germinate.

I have grown swamp , butterfly and tropical milkweed from seeds.
Swamp milkweed was the only one I had to chill first

It looks like that info in our database needs to be deleted.

after looking at Prairie moon nursery page and seeing they do indeed sell bare root plants.

I think the answer lilahmorgan wanted to know is what size pot they can grow bare root plants in.

and like I said in my first post I recommend one or two plants per 5 gallon or larger pot

this is a 3 yr old picture of plants I planted in a pot 4 yrs ago and it has returned again this year too.
but it no where near as full or tall as the ones I planted in the ground at the same time.

Confused The first photo shows information on a seed packet so I thought she was planting seeds. Green Grin!

I kind of did too , and I guess I tried to cover all the bases just encase.

it was a little confusing seed pk pics and bare root plants in comment.
