Don Hollingsworth is a peony hybridizer from Maryville, MO. He has around 50 peonies registered with the American Peony Society (I believe he is an active member). Don turned 90 years old last April (2018)!

In an interview with southernpeony.com in 2016, he listed eight of his most popular introductions: 'Garden Treasure', 'Many Happy Returns', 'My Love', 'LaDonna', 'Lorelei', 'Summer Glow', 'Show Girl', and 'Pink Teacup'. Of these his most favorite is 'Garden Treasure' which he crossed ~1968 and is one of the first American Bred intersectional (Itoh) hybrid peonies. He registered it with the APS in 1984.

'Garden Treasure' is somewhat special to me as well. Fourteen years ago I purchased this peony from Adelman for $100. This was unusual for me. I was used to spending $15-20 for a premium peony. Bottom line, it has been one of my favorite peonies every year.

I currently have 7 peonies introduced by Hollingsworth: Paeonia 'Belleville', Paeonia 'Border Charm', Paeonia 'Folk Art', Paeonia 'Garden Treasure', Paeonia 'Prairie Charm', Paeonia 'Prairie Star', Paeonia 'Show Girl'

First to bloom this year is Peony 'Show Girl'

"Paeonia 'Show Girl', 2018 photo, (2-AN-PK) Hybrid Peony, (Hollingsworth 1984), USDA Hardiness Zone 4, Medium height, Japanese /Anemone form, pink guard petals, yellow cream petalodes, side-buds, early bloomer, Michigan Bloom Month 5c, In Garden Bed V2 for 2.6 YEARS (Bann). Planted in 2015.

Parentage Dawn Pink x Echo (second generation of Lacti x Anomola). Mature plants can develop center petals. Dark green foliage. Flowers are well above the foliage.

Thanks, Frank for doing the series on the Peony breeders and what they are famous for.....or should be famous for !
I enjoy reading these excerpts on the history of modern peonies.

I had the privilege of meetin and speaking with Don the morning Anya and I were leaving to return home. He is sharp and very nice. Talked with us for some time. I think meeting him in person, along with working with Jim Adelman prepping for the judging ranks as one of my most wonderful memories.

Paeonia 'Border Charm', Common Name: (3-SL-Y) Itoh Hybrid Peony, Size: 24"", Sulfer Yellow with red stigmas, Breeder: (Hollingsworth, 1984), USDA Hardiness Zone 4, Michigan Bloom Month 5-6

Paeonia 'Border Charm' (Hollingsworth, 1984) is a 24" yellow Itoh hybrid peony. Compact and dwarf. The flowers are a soft sulfur yellow single (or semi-single). Deep bluish green foliage. Petals tips are a lighter shade of yellow. Flower has large red flares and a prominent center of sheathed carpels and red stigma. Strong stems that arch form a wide, low bush. Support is not usually required. It is a cross of a peony lactiflora cultivar and tree peony 'Alice Harding.' American peony breeders started introducing Itoh hybrids in the early to mid 1980s. This was one of those early releases.

The only peony that I have bred by Don Hollingsworth is Sandra Marie. This peony is excellent all around plant with beautiful flowers, strong stems, and lovely foliage from the purple pips to the colorful fall foliage. It is also very fertile. It has every desirable attribute wrapped in a beautiful package. It opens in deeper pink and fades to blush and white.

@frankrichards16 I can recall they used to mail Christmas cards- & wow that was a long time ago! I never did get around to creating any hybrids with those suffruticosa. Only, between the cultivars. Must have had over 15 of those, at one point & even though I had many of the old heirloom sort like 'Sarah Bernhardt' 'Mons.Jules etc...& oh so many others....,& never did try to produce anything like Itoh did... I only saved seeds of the crossed tree peonies, to grow. I left the seedlings that grew last, in the previous apartment I had. It isn't far away & can always go stop by to see what became of those.
Thanks for sharing, Shawn

Thanks, how many years for "Garden Treasure" to be double?

I have not seen a double "Garden Treasure" yet except at APS exhibition. Even the "Garden Treasure" in Adelman Peony Garden exhibition garden are mostly single or semi-double.

Not only is Hollingsworth a spectacular hybridizer, but he is also a very kind and gracious gentleman. Garden Treasure has to be my favorite Hollingsworth bred peony.
