A couple of years ago, during the annual HIPS sale (2016?), I purchased a NOID that I believe they said originated in Michigan (I would have to double check) and I'm wondering if this is a named Cultivar that anyone is familiar with.

It was labeled on the auction as:

NOID 355

Thoughts?

I am thinking that if all the folks at HIPS couldn't ID it then it is going to be a tough search to find it's name.

It is pretty though, even without a name.

Leslie, do you think they actually try to ID other people's donations?

It's my understanding that people donate their rhizomes right before the annual auctions and the HIPS people almost never see a bloom except for the picture that comes with the description submitted. Would they take it upon themselves to try to ID it? Shrug! I'm guessing they wouldn't unless someone asked them to, but I don't know.

That may be. I would have thought though that the member would have tried to get an ID. But they might have thrown it in the sale because it didn't bloom as the expected iris.

It has nice coloration. Is it a median or a tall? The bloom looks smaller like an IB.

I'll go out and take a picture of the whole plant soon. Rolling my eyes. I'm not good enough with irises to know how to classify them by size.

The reason I asked is because it looks very similar to the MTB Honorabile.

Most likely Leslie is correct. That would be my guess.

Leslie and Leon, thank you for the very good and likely suggestion of Honorabile, you two! I'm going to be headed outside shortly to take a picture and I will post a little later. I'm amazed at the iris expertise...so happy to have you two on this ID'ing task with me. Thank you!

Leon, is that a picture of Honorabile from your garden right now? This particular NOID iris is one of only four blooming in my garden so far, and you are in a similar growing zone as me (I'm 5b/6a), so if it's blooming for you right now, that might be a key indicator, too...

Take what I say with a grain of salt......but.......yes, it's "similar" to what is called "Honorabile", and , if it were me.....I'd leave it at that..."similar". To start with, "there is a lot of controversy over what the "real" Honorabile" looks like, so what some sellers vend as "Honorabile", has not really been "proven". I have a pretty good idea who donated this noid....and if they called it a "noid"...trust me...ID wasn't close enough to any named variety, to call it anything else !
All to often, our human desire to "classify and name " everything starts over riding our common sense, and we feel that, if it doesn't HAVE a name, it's somehow "not complete". Enjoy it for what it is ! Remember, "A rose by any other name would smell as sweet !", and so will an iris !

Arlyn - thank you! That article was an interesting read. I thought the last quote, after what you had said, was sort of funny:

"Confusius taught that everything must have a name, and that it must always be called by this name. If we do not refer to a thing by its correct name, disorder will ensue, the bad will be preferred over the good and true knowledge will elude us. So for goodness sake, if you are growing SANS SOUCI and calling it HONORABILE go out to the garden and change the nameplate. We need all the true knowledge we can aquire, and we certainly do not need any more disorder."

It sounds to me like it is Sans Souci, mine definitely has veining.

Picture forthcoming (after I finish this cup of coffee Rolling my eyes. )...

Also, we have to remember that , the iris called "honorabile" is known to "sport".....(produce a vegiative offspring with different traits than it's parent), and has done so, many times !

are two of them, also Kalidieoscope, Sport Coat, and others.......and it's quite possible that Sans Souci was a "sport", also ! No "pedigree listings" are available for a great many of these older irises. And, also, the chance that sometime over the last 150, 0r so, years, a seed fell that was a "better grower" than the parent, and had very similar traits......and then crowded out the parent plant !
These things don't come with serial numbers on the bottom !

This is the best advice from Arlyn. A guess is only a a guess. The mire gets too deep for me after that. Smiling Good luck. Thumbs up
