I started growing an avocado tree from the seed about 1 year 1/2 ago. I've transplanted it one before. Now it's grown too much for its container and started to turn the root brown... I switched it in a slightly bigger container hoping it would help it from dying but not the browning started at the top. Not sure what to do now!

Unfortunately, the only thing to do now is to discard it.

Your avocado didn't need a bigger pot, it needed to be pruned or pinched back so that it wouldn't get so tall. Unnecessary repotting very frequently causes root damage and root suffocation and rarely solves plant problems.
