I'm sure there was a previous thread answering this, but I cannot for the life of me find it right now...

A tree mail is the private messaging system used by this site. You can send other members private messages ("tree mails") using it; the little envelope in the top right corner allows you to access the system. It also turns red when you have unread treemails.
