What kind of tree is this? I swear it gave me a rash similar to poison ivy

That is a Tulip Poplar - Liriodendron tulipifera. I will be surprised if this species had anything to do with causing a rash, but I suppose many things are possible.

I'd look more closely to see if there isn't some other culprit - growing on or nearby this fantastic and long lived native shade tree - that may really be the problem.

I agree, the tree is Tulip Poplar (Liriodendron tulipifera) with Poison Ivy (Toxicodendron radicans) growing beneath!
