I m ay have missed it, but why do you not add information on how to harvest and use some of the weeds in your library? Why do you only tell how to eradicate the weeds.
Look at the lowly dandelion and it many uses:
- Wine
- Salads
- Tea

for a few uses.

I can't speak for the site, but a plant is only considered a weed if it's growing where you don't want it. So by definition a weed is something you don't want and if you do want it it would not be called a weed.

The word "weed" is subjective. There are many plants that grow here in Florida where I live that are considered noxious, difficult to control weeds, whereas in other parts of the country or world, they may be easily kept under control.

If you look at the information in our plant database for Dandelion (Taraxacum officinale) it lists the following Uses:

Groundcover
Culinary Herb
Medicinal Herb
Vegetable
Salad greens
Cooked greens

The information in the database is placed there by members like you and I. If the member did not know the uses , then it is left blank. Members can suggest additions, or change entries in the database. A moderator or admin person will approve or deny the suggestions.

And any member can extend that database entry by adding a comment for the plant. If someone had a great recipe for Dandelion salad---they could add it as a comment.

I just realized that perhaps cadecker was at the "Learning Library" section about weeds: https://garden.org/learn/libra... rather than a particular plant in the database.

@CarolineScott, What a great idea to have recipes in the database comment section for the particular plant!

I also object to the weed section. Any plant has value when in its' native ecosystem. I consider many plants weeds in my yard, but that is the product of comparing the plants to my personal preference for the micro-plot of earth that we call "our yard." All plants are all native to somewhere. I would never call a native plant in its' indigenous location a weed, even if I'm pulling or digging it up to compost instead of live in my "flower bed."

Usually, it's simply a matter of living with the plant to eventually recognize the benefits of having it around...

Whether it is an indicator of soil fertility, or a nutrient accumulator, or a butterfly host plant, or source of seed for the song birds... All those natives are beneficial...

Can't say the same for vinca major, Chinese wisteria... Or... Down here... We have those so-called nursery weeds.... You get them when you purchase potted plants...
Things like hairy crab weed (fatoua) and chamberbitter (phylanthes).

And... Even those born-pregnant plants have uses... Phylanthes is said to be helpful for kidneys and liver issues.... Fatoua (as bad as it is) can be ignored as the first thing that the deer eat.... When Bambi drops by...

Weeds are weeds and hateful, spiteful, pernicious devils which take up time getting rid of them when you could be doing something better.
I don't care about their nutritional value or anything else 'good' about them. They're ugly and I'll have a pizza or Buffalo Wings. And maybe a salad once in a while.
Thumbs down
