We had a landscaper redo our shrubs and plants last fall, so we're getting to see most of them in full bloom for the first time this year. There's no sign of a bloom in this guy yet, so I'm wondering if it's something intentionally planted or an uninvited visitor taking advantage of my patience!

Any help would be appreciated!

Not Texas star, I have one of those. It isn't forming a tree otherwise the leaves almost look like a Guava. Looks like the right stem is having some growth issues. Is it the only one there?

Maybe an Abelmoschus. Looks like a couple of flower buds are visible in the photo?

It does look like a Hibiscus though. I'd wait to see what happens.

No, it's just aberrant growth that happens sometimes with plants.

Thanks -- any impact on future generations of the plant?

So back to this guy. Is this thing going to flower? These "pods" have been around for the last 10 days or so and not opened up...

No idea what this is, but you really have my curiosity up. Would love to see a picture of this after it blooms!

Be patient , hibiscus buds take a long time to form flowers , but the longer time the more spectacular the bloom.
they will show their color before opening.

It's a Hibiscus, most likely a hybrid which is why the leaves don't match known species. But judging by the leaf shape and flower buds, I'm almost certain that Texas Star/Hibiscus coccineus is one of the parent plants.

Now you've got me very excited!

To be honest, not a very handsome plant, so hopefully the blooms more than make up for it!
