It is about 2 feet tall and in the shade. Is it a palm? We're in central South Carolina.

I agree, it reminds me of a Saw Palmetto (Serenoa repens) seedling.

My first guess would be Saw Palmetto but at this point, they all look alike. What kind of palms are growing near you?

Another possibility and one that is also found in S.C. is the Sabal Palm (Sabal palmetto)

I think it looks more like a sawtooth in all features except the edges are smooth. I can run my finger down the edge and it doesn't hurt. Thanks.
