The horticulturalist at my local nursery didn't know what this was. He was pretty sure it was a weed or wild shrub of some sort. I pulled it out anyway since it was completely out of control and ugly. It never What I find strange is how it got there. There were 3 of them side by side and I'm pretty sure the previous owner planted them.

Clethra alnifolia I think. If so, yes people do buy and plant them.
