Do you see what I see? Mind blown! This is one of the Daredevil Daylily seed crosses I bought on the LA last winter. From my notes, it is no older than 4 months and 7 days. This is definitely a year of firsts for me. This is a Military School X Seedling cross.

It is so much fun watching a seedling bed and picking out the darkest foliage, the fastest ones to multiply, first ones with a scape, etc.
I am beginning to get rust in my seedling beds, so that will now allow me to pick out the rust resistant ones and the rust prone ones.

No rust here. But the foliage is definitely taking a beating. Think the thrips are setting them up for a lot of leaf streak. No one seems to be dying though. Just the way nature cycles about. A new plague every year, to weed out the weak. Have a nut sedge and crab grass invasion this year also. Been years since I saw any nut sedge at all! I'll never forget the wild white yarrow invasion. That stuff has long, long roots! And the year the Japanese Beetles ate my Coneflower blooms as soon as they appeared. Anyhow, this too shall pass. All in all, it's been a good growing year. So says that seedling!

I got seeds from Daredevil Daylily too, years ago, and one of my seedling clumps is gorgeous, rust-free, and an eye-catcher while blooming in May. I am seriously considering registering it this year. The seedlings I've grown from her seeds have all done well in my zone and soil.
What lies behind us and what lies before us are tiny matters, compared to what lies within us.

So, the original scapey thingy slowly withered up, and I went on about my business. But today I see this. Looks like it's making another run at it. Crazy little seedling! None of it's 10 siblings is doing this, even a couple that are a bit bigger.

Only one bud left. I pinched off the prolif looking thing as soon as it started to brown. The second bud was found on the ground last week. Plenty of rain here lately, so we shall see if this seedling can pull it off. Ether way, it's marked as a keeper.

First picture is from yesterday. Second is today. Not too shabby for a less than 6 month old seedling. Broken pattern on the petals, sepals too, but hard to see in photo. I can see how hybridizing can be addicting. Smiling I have warned this seedling that anything else, other than foliage, will be snipped!

While I'm not a fan of the color, muddy mauve, I will hope that next year it's clearer. And if this seedling keeps being such an over-achiever, I may become a fan of muddy mauve. Lol! I do like the feathered eye zone and the green throat. Definitely the right shape for a spider/UF lover, which is me. We shall see. But I'll never forget this flower. Faded out this evening, still pretty. Forgive me, but my very first seedling bloom. Just imagine how I'll be next year when the rest bloom!

Congratulations! It should be a little faded by 6pm. I usually am.
