Charley, I'd rather see an edited photo that shows the actual bloom. My iPad picks up way too much blue and everything is skewed. I end up using a filter on some of the pictures to cancel it out- always feel like I'm cheating a bit, but I don't want the camera (and my uploads) to show something that isn't there.

That being said, I don't want photographers (or hybridizers!) to edit in something that's isn't there- don't show me a "blue" eye when it's more like lavender or gray...

Nice shots today btw. That delphinium is gorgeous, as are the daylilies Thumbs up
The drought monitor out of UNL (Univ of Nebraska, Lincoln campus) shows that Arroyo Seco is in a severe drought- as is most of the 4 Corners region... We had two inches of rain in the wee hours- wish I could send you some. It ruined a few (okay, many) blooms today.

.. And I understand your thoughts on the "unwritten" rule. Personally, I try to keep it to FFE's, FFO's, and my absolute favorite ones- else I'd never get done posting some days...

Charley, I want the one that looks closer to the actual flower. If you know enough to manipulate the camera to achieve that, I think you're a genius!

Ginny and Jillz, I do the same thing. They can look very different!

Oh, Ginny, I just saw where you said that you post the exact same photo! Hilarious!

Not so much right now between bloom and rebloom, but now when I go pod hunting and open one up and see big black seeds I still say ooooh, aaaaah and WOW. When I see mushy little shriveled up seeds I make different verbal noises!

Seedfork said:Charlemagne,
"My question to you is, where is the truth (other than unattainable,) do you prefer an original un-manipulated photo that is less accurate or a highly manipulated photo that looks closer to the actual flower?"
I always prefer a photo that looks as much like the actual bloom in the garden. My choice would be to have a camera that allows for those pictures without any manipulation.
I do almost no editing on my photos, but some. I just don't have the patience for it, so most of my photos are "what you get is what you see". I might take ten different shots while in the garden of the same bloom, but then I just pick the best one. If I really messed up I might have to brighten or darken the photo a bit but that is all it gets. If none of the photos look decent then there is always tomorrow, except in rare occasions when I really need a good photo for a specific purpose.
The best photo of a bloom today, will not look like the bloom tomorrow...so as long as it is a good representation of what the bloom looks like sometimes I am happy.

I also use minimal manipulation, primarily cropping to focus on the blooms and healing to get rid of distracting spots in the background. I have carefully adjusted the settings on my camera, contrast, sharpness, noise reduction, and saturation to most accurately capture what my eye tells me is real.

I don't think of this as photo manipulation (every camera manipulates the photos it takes,) I think of it as camera manipulation. I don't change it, it just means I'm shooting with a slightly different camera.

To make this July 2018 Blooms official;

Beautiful images everyone! Not only some gorgeous daylilies but some very good photography as well. I tip my hat to you. Black Eagle keeps jumping out at me...and the list grows. Sighing!
I'm not sure about an unwritten rule for only posting FFO's, it's a July Bloom thread. Personally, I like to see more than one image from someones garden, it gives an idea of how a plant blooms through the season. One good FFO or bloom does not make a good garden plant and a plant that needs a bloom or two to get it's act together may put on a super show the rest of the season.
Bloom is just getting started here with several FFO's yesterday and today. Also a few that are blooming on early scapes, late rebloom scapes from the extended warm fall last year.

Bee's Bettie Sue, one of the better blooms on an early scapes a few weeks ago. Has normal scapes coming now.

Van Gogh's Ear, opened nicely on one of our very cool mornings 2 weeks ago.

Pawprints On My Heart, FFO yesterday with temps in the 90's. Image was after being in full sun all day, evening light through the shade of the oak tree.

Tossed By the Waves, FFO enjoying the early morning shade.

Two more FFO's today Marseilles Watercolor and Forest For the Sun.

Ginny, we've had our share of those days- yesterday during the day and the day before that. We get three or four days of high heat and high humidity, then it rains so it's cooler for a day, but with high humidity.

Most of my photos are from 7:30 ish am or so. By noon they're melting most days...
