I agree with Rita plus if you buy blooming potted bulbs ,plant the whole pot until this fall then replant where you want them in the garden.

I agree too, buy some bulbs, Audrey, and they will bloom for you this year, and be much, much less expensive. Fall planted lilies don't bloom until the next year, but spring planted lilies bloom the same year.

I've found some pretty sweet deals on potted lilies, particularly at Lowe's. Check them out as they bloom so you know what you are getting. The last time I bought some I think they were clearanced at 2 or 3 bucks for a pot of 3. Considering that your average asiatic is around 5 bucks, then add shipping, I don't think you can go wrong. Just make sure they look healthy. Thumbs up
Where are we going, and why am I in this hand-basket?

Just came back from the hardware store (a nice one) and they had a couple from the 'Tiny' series ~ pot of 3 for 7.99. B&D has them for 4 bucks per bulb. So get out there and get shopping, Audrey!

I exist, if only to enable. OK, back in the hand-basket I go....

Well!!!!! Our lilies are normally a small pot for around 20.00. So, I agree, if they're that cheap get out there and buy Audrey!

You can get a much better selection online, though. How about some of each. In fact there should be a co-op this fall.

Good grief ~ I wouldn't buy at that price either!

I agree that you aren't going to find anything fancy or unusual at the box stores, maybe a little better selection at a nursery. But for the really good stuff you have to go online. Good thing we know all the secrets, huh?

Last year, Hallson's had a late in the season sale (June) where most of the 'Tinys' they were carrying were 50% off.
Nothing that's been done can ever be changed.

Some of my lilies have been popping up and much to my dismay have paid the price. Normally this time of year we would still be under snow but haven't had any since early February and have had temperatures in the 20C range for a number of weeks soooooooooo here's the results -

Lilies coming up between the daylilies in one of the daylily gardens. These are not as far along as my RED ALERT lilies in another area. Plus my SILK ROAD lilies I saw were just, just showing there noses up at the ground now.

Ouch, Brian, that hurts. However, it looks like you have enough left to cover the season.

Even if you cover the lilies, if it gets down in the 20s, they can be toast.

Yes I do have enough to cover the season as many have not sprouted yet but my canadense came up after a year and it's supposed to get colder for another two days so I could loose them. It's snowing now and all my spring bulbs look frozen. All the buds on my magnolias are gone and a lot f my perennials have been frozen off. Right now I'm not sure what kind of garden I'm going to have this year.

That's really is sad, Brian. Even if the flower buds were not damaged (which they probably are), you might not have sufficient leaves to produce ample food for them and next year. If the flower buds do make it, I'd consider cutting them off anyway, because there is a good chance they will be deformed by the cold.

As you realize, martagons tend to fair better with late frosts.

I am 3-4 weeks ahead of normal here, too. I have a few martagon noses showing, but they are all tight and not more than an inch tall. Long time regulars here know that I fall mulch my lilies way after the ground is frozen to hold in the cold. So I seldom have any worries about late frosts.

we had snow overnight. Not much and AM temps mean it will melt soon.
I am thinking snow is better than frost.

Rick, I normally do too but this past winter our ground never froze at all which has never happened to me before. There has been no snow since early Feb. and the temps have been way above normal since late Feb. We had three weeks in March with temps in the 20's C and this past week the night temps have been down to -7C. My entire garden is so screwed up I'm not sure how much will even survive.
