We got a freeze again last night and are expecting another one tonight. I don't know that I'll have any thing blooming this year.

We faired better than forecasted last night, but tonight is supposed to get down to 30*. I'll be crossing finger and toes and holding my breath because the garden is far too along to protect. Lilies are 2 ft. tall and some of the tall irises are blooming.
Where are we going, and why am I in this hand-basket?

We got down to 28 degrees F a couple nights this week after 6 weeks or so of balmy spring weather. Lots of lilies were way up out of the ground. I even have some with small buds! Having sorted through what could have been damage, it appears that only a few trumpets and a few orientals were affected. It must really just depend on the variety, microclimate and such. Just when you think you can make a "blanket statement" about how things should do, it goes to show you you just can't I guess. There are way too many lilies around here to cover for a freeze. And had I guessed who might be affected with that decrease in temps, well, I would have been wrong.

That said, do know one thing for certain:
The weeds fared very well, no damage whatsoever.

I agree. One just can't guess. I think its accurate to say in a general way, Trumpets and Orientals are the first to be 'touched'. But I've found differences from Trumpet to Trumpet and even Trumpet to Trumpet clones of the same parent planted less than a foot apart--where one would freeze and the other didn't. My Father once said he thought it had something to do with how much sugar a bulb had stored up in it. Well, I don't know about that. There's so many factors that come into play, but chemistry must play a part, I'm sure. At any rate, touched by frost or not, these cold nights certainly aren't doing us or the lilies any favor. Below 32F for more than 7 hours on 4/11 here.

Jo Ann, most all my Trumpets are that color. Even when tarped, they look distressed and limp in the morning but they perk up during the day. Tarping is no fun either, its a two person ballet dance on the toes--and my back is killing me too, right now. Hope this is the end of it!!!

I am hoping its the end too. We do get frosts in mid may sometimes but I never noticed a dramatic loss of lilies.

My Chiara and Cheops are definitely toast. All the rest look pretty good. They are so spread all over, I couldn't possibly cover them all. I did spread straw on quite a few. It's funny to see. The lilies are pushing the straw up and it looks like a hat.

Frost hasn't been a problem here but the rain sure has. I've been out most of the afternoon cleaning up and surveying the damage. I think many of the new lilies I planted last fall just plain rotted away. Even some in my one raised bed haven't shown up yet.

With my pine tree down and out (due to too much rain and then the weight of snow) I'll be planning some redesigning of that area. Kind of like blank palette.

Blank palettes are a gardeners dream (well, at least mine). So many options and I know you have seedlings that must need homes in that slate.

Rot is a bad, bad word. The one most single thing I fear the most when it comes to a special 'one of a kind' plant before I scale. I'd rather have frost. But--I've learned that young seedlings can tolerate an unbelievable amount of water in the Spring and still be OK.

A 12 inch high Lilium martagon 'Claude Shride' had no damage at 21F.
Nor did six 5 inch high aurelian sprouts. These were fairly chunky, though, and will grow to 6 ft this year, I think.

I find the aurelians to be super tough. I've been propagating scale bulblets all winter on my front porch and the green leaves never did die back. Green all winter. We had temps in the low twenties.

Seedling leaves of most species (not just lilies) tend to be more evergreen than mature leaves. Some of my lily seedlings stayed green and normal right through 10F.
