I am blown away by all of your beautiful eyed blooms Fred. Just love them and they look so good after so much rain.

Michelle I love that double and the The Electric Red seedling is wonderful too with that huge green throat and saturated color. Also love Buddy's Black Jack seedling.

For comparison, here is are a couple shots of my little seedling bed. Remember, these were planted last fall, directly in the ground. After harvesting seed, I air dry for a couple days, then store dry on a shelf until I planted in November.

I put all the plastic tape up to discourage my garden cats from digging in there. It works!

Excuse that I have not dug out the dandelions by the seedlings yet.... *Blush*

Look for me to post photos of the blooms on these in about 3 years. Blinking Whistling Thumbs up

Wonderful Juli!!!! Looks like you have a good crop of babies. I hope they grow and maybe in 2 years you'll have blooms!!!

I used to be a member of the "Winter Sowing" group on Gardenweb and it's a very interesting concept and it works. I've never direct sowed daylily seeds, My soil would drown them in gooy clay and then bake them in the summer.

I can't imagine starting daylilies indoors. I've always done it outside. Many northern growers do this... Steve Moldovan did, as well as Curt Hanson, Dottie Warrell and Charles Applegate. (all Ohio hybridizers) I learned from them, and never knew any better until the internet came along and I read about people starting them inside.

Curt told me that he thinks the seeds of plants that would grow to be evergreens will germinate right away and be killed off in winter. However, semi-evergreen and dormant won't germinate right away. So, by sowing direct to the ground in fall, we automatically cull seedlings that would not be hardy here.

No idea if that is actually true. It was close to 20 years ago when he told me this, so my memory my be a bit off too.... Whistling

When I first started thinking about hybridizing everything I read said it would take 2-3 years to see blooms. I said the heck with that, but my friend Kim wanted to do it and Fred set me straight on how here you can get blooms in less than a year so I said ok and the rest is history.

Nice seedlings Michele, I think if I had to wait three years I would not be doing this. I tried amaryllis and I quit for that reason. This form is getting pretty long so I will start a new one "Seedling Progress 3" this morning. Thanks to all who joined in and posted.
