I was just watching the World Cup final, in which one Croatian player scored goals for both Croatia and France- oops! His name is Mario Mandžukić.

This reminded me that most rose-lovers are not aware that 'Marie Pavié' is not the original name of that fine rose. It was named for Marie Pavić, an Rose amateur who lived in Zagreb (then called Agram) in Croatia, and was a correspondent of Alégatière.

The earliest reference was in Journal des Roses, and Marie Pavić became Marie Pavié. The error persisted- possibly because most rosarians didn't know how to pronounce the correct name. For English-speakers, it was suggested that the last syllable rhymes with "rich"... PAH-vitch.

Maybe I'm too persnickety, but if a plant is named for a person, I think it should be called by that person's correct name. On the other hand, it doesn't bother me at all that English rosarians almost immediately changed the spelling of 'Solfatare' to 'Solfaterre'...

Jeri, I have not been able to figure out how to write it using my Mac keyboard. I did find a convoluted tutorial on how to use hex Unicode, but after trying that, I was still nowhere. Copy and paste is still the only way I can see to do it.

I don't see why programmers couldn't have just made the keyboard process for accenting vowels also work for consonants. Confused

The process might be simpler if you use Windows, but I kinda doubt it...

I'd be very interested if anyone knows how to do this easily...

In windows 10 it is pretty easy to accent the vowels, I have not found a way with the consonants.

Yes, vowels are easy with a Mac keyboard; I type in French fairly often, and in German on occasion; I can do consonant symbols such as ç (option + c) or ß (option + s), but accents or diacritical marks used in other languages would require a good bit of effort.

Thank You! for posting the video for Windows users.
