Hopefully someone will know this. Right now all over San Diego County we have a beautiful purple flowering tree in bloom. It's especially perfect because this time of year can be particularly brown. In addition around about December we have another purple flowering tree across the county. I'm sure one of them is a Jacaranda, any idea what the other one is? |

Jacaranda is the one blooming in winter. Summer blooming, maybe Bauhinia (Orchid tree)? Hong Kong Orchid tree - Bauhinia blakeana or Purple Orchid tree - Bauhinia purpurea. If neither of those match, you will have to show us some photos. Life is not a journey to the grave with the intention of arriving safely in a pretty and well preserved body, but rather to skid in broadside, thoroughly used up, totally worn out, and proclaiming...."WOW What a Ride!!" -Mark Frost President: Orchid Society of Northern Nevada Webmaster: osnnv.org |

Jacaranda s are blooming here now. |

Well, that's silly of them. I thought they bloomed in the winter. Oh wait! I've got it backwards - Orchid trees bloom in winter. I thought the one blooming now was probably Jacaranda, that's what got me going on the winter blooming tree. They look about the same to me, I don't have one in my garden so unfortunately any photos would be as a drive by and probably not helpful in identification. (And it's not winter 😉) Is it possible that the jacaranda bloom twice a year? |

I don't think so. The Bauhinia bloom in winter, but are nothing similar to Jacaranda. Of course this year our winter/ summer has been pretty confusing for plants...and people. |

Did the flowers look like this: Hong Kong Orchid Tree (Bauhinia x blakeana) Jacaranda: Jacaranda (Jacaranda mimosifolia) Life is not a journey to the grave with the intention of arriving safely in a pretty and well preserved body, but rather to skid in broadside, thoroughly used up, totally worn out, and proclaiming...."WOW What a Ride!!" -Mark Frost President: Orchid Society of Northern Nevada Webmaster: osnnv.org |

DaisyI said:Did the flowers look like this: Totally not the orchid tree, the tree blooming now must be jacaranda. Some of them are huge, the blooms are beginning to drop so they're less vibrant. As soon as the sun lets up a bit I'll take a photo of the hillside behind our house. It's too washed out now. |

Can you take a closeup of one of the flowers too? DaisyI said:Can you take a closeup of one of the flowers too? Ha! Not with out climbing up the side of the hill. (It's rattlesnake season) ![]() Over the next couple of days if I see one roadside I'll stop and get a picture. |

I thought Tabebuia is another possibility. Without a pic of the blooms, it's hard to tell. He who plants a garden plants happiness. |

@islander Tabebuia is beautiful and blooms in late winter/early spring right? They're planted all over my college campus (the ones on campus are pink) I didn't think about that one with lilac blooms. I wonder. Let me see if I have a photo of that in my images. From the links daisyl posted I'm sure the summer bloomer is jacaranda. |

Beautiful Jacaranda! Jacaranda (Jacaranda mimosifolia) is found in San Diego and blooms from spring, through summer. ~ I'm an old gal who still loves playing in the dirt! ~ Playing in the dirt is my therapy ... and I'm in therapy a lot! |

It is pretty isn't... I guess there's no way to know the winter bloomer unless another San Diegian shows up and already knows. |

Or wait until next winter and take another closeup to share with us.
