My favorite garden helper is our Siberian Husky, "Sprite" (as in garden sprite, not the soft drink).

Thank you!

She gets a little sad on rainy days when we can't go out to work in the garden.

Your garden Sprite is such a beautiful girl, Mike. My garden's always full of cats, as you know, but they usually aren't "helpers" in any sense of the word. When they aren't tripping me, they're angling for petting by getting between me and the plants I'm working on, or they're lying down on small plants and crushing the life out of them. Pepplegoose. who died just a week ago to my great sorrow, was a true helper, however. He would stand behind plants for me, providing a white backdrop, so that my camera could capture the true colors of blooms. Here he's standing behind Double Feature and Royal Albert.

Oh, Zuzu, I'm so sad to hear about Pebblegoose. I remember meeting him, and knowing that among all your feline friends, he held a special position in the garden and especially in your heart.

It's a huge loss, but he was 17 and he'd had a happy and healthy life. He died as peacefully as he had lived, just fading away gradually until the day he fell asleep forever.

Lovely garden helpers everybody!
My kitties don't get to go outside. But our dog Kya does. She's not really much of a help tho. Doesn't keep the dang deer out. But she does watch out for bad little squirrelys.
Thumb of 2018-07-20/Beth_NorCal/6ccce2

But we have some "new" garden helpers. Our chickens "accidentally" got out of the pen a few weeks ago one evening and I found them just outside the gate playing happily in the compost pile. I dump their poop and the pine shavings out there to compost so I can use it later around the garden. They were kicking it allover the place, on top of each other and everywhere! When one would find a worm, they'd all chase her all over the place. They had so much fun that we decided we're going to let them out once a week to stir it all up. I just have to make sure it's on an evening when I give them their dried mealworms. If they stray too far, I can to coax them back to the pen with their favorite treat! "Crack for Chickens!" LOL

Rosalina is a Silver-laced Wyandotte, and she and her sister Petunia are the skiddish ones. Do not like being caught!
Thumb of 2018-07-20/Beth_NorCal/95c4e7
Petunia actually is the only one of the girls that will not go outside the pen. She just watches the other girls playing out there.

Elvira is my sweet Alpha hen who nearly died on me a few months ago from being egg-bound. Thankfully she recovered. She and her sister Morticia are Black Sex-links who lay big fat x-lg dk brown eggs

Morticia is my sassy brat, always yakkin' about something

Henrietta is a character with her goofy sounds and silly waddle. She's an Easter Egger and lays light blue-green eggs.

Her baby sister Lulu is sort of the runt of the group and she gets picked on by almost all the girls. She can hold her own with them, but she's come to realize she's safe with me when I'm out there. She's a sweetie.
Thumb of 2018-07-20/Beth_NorCal/bec5a5
Grizzie (Griselda) and Ezzie (Esmeralda) are my Barred Rocks. Ezzie likes to bite me and has drawn blood numerous times. But I love her anyway!
Thumb of 2018-07-20/Beth_NorCal/a12aea
Gabriella is my "dirty bird." She's always dirty for some reason. She and her sister Annabelle are my big Light Brahmas. They are the coolest chickies
Thumb of 2018-07-20/Beth_NorCal/1012dc
Annabelle is such a goofball. Makes the weirdest honking sounds. She lets me lift her up in the air like an airplane.
Thumb of 2018-07-20/Beth_NorCal/a7bc8f
Last but not least is Josephine. She's Fred's sister. She reminds me of a rooster. She's taller and more masculine looking than Fred. She was the protector of the two white silkies we had for awhile. Had to re-home them because we can't have roosters, and one ended up being one. Couldn't keep one and not the other, so they went to a new home together.
Thumb of 2018-07-20/Beth_NorCal/27e627

I love my girls. They're my "therapy" animals. When ya feel crappy, just go out and hang with the chickies and you can forget all your troubles. They're so entertaining and a joy to watch. When they're happy, they make me happy!

Lovey is adorable, Lyn.

Beth, Kya looks very sweet and your chicken photos are as wonderful as your rose photos. I love Lulu! She looks like a wood carving. Fred and Josephine make me want a new dress in those colors, made of fabric in that pattern.

I haven't had chickens for many years, but I miss them. Mine used to follow me all around the garden because they knew I'd be uncovering lots of sowbugs and earwigs as I worked. I'd absentmindedly reach out and pet them as if they were my cats.

Spartacus is a cutie, Peggy.

Beth, I am very impressed with your chicken portraiture! I find chickens very difficult to photograph.

I'm sure Lovey is glad to have you to entertain her, Lyn. Cats are quite selective about whom they adopt.

Peggy, Spartacus looks to be a capable defender of the garden. I would not challenge him.

The only helpers that are always available here are too many dogs, although the cows and horses consider themselves responsible for the pruning duties.

No sweet beasties here. However, I have been listening to 60's music while I clean the house and they have been talking about how today is the day of the first moon walk. I remember where I was and what I was doing at the time history was being made.
When they started playing Sonny and Cher's, "I Got You Babe", it was a song I always sang to my sweet kitty whom I had for 19 years. I used to talk to her about having a house and a garden. I used to tell her how much she would love it. Exactly 6 months after her death, I bought my house. I know it was through her intervention from above. Smiling I need to get a rose for her. Unfortunately, none are available with her name nor is the rose Miss Kitty available in the US. Sighing!
Love seeing everyone's pictures of their sweet beasties in their garden. Hope more will post! Now, back to my regularly scheduled programming---finish cleaning the house!

Your last sentence proves that your first sentence is true. If you had any sweet beasties, cleaning the house would never be finished. Big Grin
