At a Massachusetts nursery today, I spotted a Sempervivum heuffelii cultivar named 'Sphinx'. It didn't ring a bell. I bought two($4 each on sale) including a flowering one with several surrounding rosettes. Searching the NGA Jovibarba database the name gives no results, also tried searching on German site Sempervivum-liste.de and similarly no results. The plant is grown by a large wholesale nursery in Connecticut named "Sunny Border"; they're more reliable than many big growers but that's not saying much these days. I believe it's another nursery name concoction after they've lost the true name. Comments?

Some plants bought today, including a semp cultivar, Rosularia serpenticola, the mystery heuffelii cultivar, and a couple others.

It is pretty Mark.
I did a search, and come up with nothing. You might contact the wholesale nursery and see what information they have.

I have sent a Facebook message to Pierre Bennerup, he's the CEO of Sunny Border, a large wholesale grower in Connecticut, inquiring about the provenance of heuffelii 'Sphinx'. If I hear anything, I'll post it here.

BigT, when I saw your note about this, I took the little green interloper and took it out of the wheelbarrow to be dumped, then forget where I put it. Just tipped out the rain water on my little portable folding table and there it was. I was going to toss it, but if you want it, it's yours Smiling

Curious as in, here is the colorful hen with all her matching little chicklets peaking from under her skirts, then there's this curious little, bright green guy shouting, "Hey! Look at me!" I was curious as to how it might have gotten there. A mystery within your mystery. Smiling

You evidently picked up on my nurturing nature. I can find a home for it. Thank You!

I've not heard back yet from my contact at Sunny Border Nursery about the source of heuff 'Sphinx'. I shall try contacting the nursery through the regular website contact route.

I meant to add commentary regarding unfortunate trends with general plant nurseries and garden centers. Most general nurseries are ruled by pot size, and a one-size fits all soil mix. This nursery's semps are planted in 1 quart pots, tipping the pot out roots are only in the top 1/4 of the pot, one is basically paying $8 - $12.95 for a bunch of soil. I bought the two 'Sphinx' plants at late-season half price. The soil is atrocious, dense, heavy, and wet, in this case mostly large chunks of bark. That would account for the many half-dead to totally rotted plants on the nursery benches, hardly a soil mix for semps. The soil block around the semp was so hard and dense, had to power wash it off.

Two views of the rosettes freed from confinement in heavy muck "soil", they breathed a sigh of relief. Many plants of this cultivar on the bench were rotted to some degree.

This is the flowering rosette with 3 adjacent rosettes, soil washed off revealing the tap root and divisibility of the other rosettes. After it finishes flowering, this can be easily divided. I love seeing the roots on plants revealed, one can learn a lot about a plant when understanding what it does underground.

Two plants repotted, a better size pot for a semp, on right both plants shown repotted.
