Hello,

What type of plant is this, and how can I make it happier?

Thanks!

I agree with Lin that is a Pachira, but it could be a Malabar Chestnut (Pachira glabra). Once it flowers, you'll be able to easily distinguish. P. glabra are often mislabeled and sold at nurseries as P. aquatica. A great site about either is https://laidbackgardener.blog/....

@starbookworm, thanks for that link with the information about both P. glabra and P. aquatica. Thumbs up

Thanks, @plantladylin. After years of buying one thing from the big box stores and then it struggling from inproper care, I learned don't trust the tags. And I don't have a brown thumb like I always believed.

Yes, sometimes big box stores are notorious for having incorrect labels on plants. A couple of years ago, I was at a local big box garden center and when I was checking out, I mentioned to the cashier that I'd noticed quite a few of their houseplants had incorrect labels stuck in the pots. The cashier asked if I'd mind waiting a few minutes because there was an employee from their supplier (nursery) in the store and I should tell her about it. So, I spent a little time talking to the nursery employee and she asked me if I could point out the plants that I'd noticed with incorrect labels. She went walking around checking a bunch of plants and was a bit upset because she found many more mislabeled plants than I had noticed; she yanked labels out of tons of plants on the tables! I told her that I I'm sure sometime customers grab a label from a pot to read about a particular plant and may inadvertently stick it back into the incorrect pot but she was apologetic and said that she knew that wasn't the case here because they'd just unloaded all of those plants from the trucks. She told me that most of their nursery workers were non English speaking and that they were trying to double check before plants were loaded onto the trucks, it looked like someone wasn't following up and doing their job.

We are fortunate to have garden.org and the Plant ID forum because there are so many knowledgeable members here who are very helpful in identification!
