Liz ~ Thank You!

The first two are of interest, to me anyway. The one cross I had my hopes on, well I broke it off by accident! I will try it again sometime.

Some of these have a lot of seeds so I am going to have to have a big seedling bed. And these are only a few.

Liz, do yours have their own refrigerator? You made so many crosses, I can't imagine that you put them in your kitchen refrigerator.

And your seedling beds... I hope your dad gets that plow out again for you. At least you have a good size farm now. Any new pictures?

janwax said:Thanks Liz. I'm trying a few new things - damp vermiculite for their resting place - 6 weeks in the fridge in freezer bags.. I've also got a small pot of fresh seeds, not dried, not soaked, potted in a gallon of good quality potting soil - just to see if they sprout - if they actually require a period of chill, it may not get cold enough in CA. I've had moderately good results in the past with wrapping the seeds in damp paper towels, then foil before putting in the fridge, but it occurred to me that the chemicals in the paper-making process, bleaches and such, might have a negative effect on the seeds. Vermiculite is, I'm told, inert. We'll see!

Jan ~ How much vermiculite did you put in each bag? Just damp?

I think that I put too much vermiculite in the bags and also too wet. I am trying to fix that now. It was hard to find the seeds! That tells me that I used too much! Sticking tongue out

Robin ~ In that one cross, there were 77 seeds!

I lay awake imagining all the possibilities! nodding Well, not really, but almost! I have been getting up so early to meet the workmen at 6:45, I will be going to bed soon! (And sleep!)

Still, I am really curious about what will emerge.

I am inclined to think that it is a very compatible cross due to the number of seeds. Now what colors or patterns emerge will be the question. There is where I will need patience and try not to kill them along the way.

They dont take up much room since I keep them in their individual envelopes. I dont do any soaking until they come out.

For now I'm going to tack them onto the last row of the large bed. Next year I will have to make a new bed I think. Slowly but surely the big bed is coming along. I have 2 rows completely ready for planting finally with 10 more to complete. They are roughly 86 x 3 so that should keep me busy for a while. It has been a long process between the tilling, plowing, loam delivery, and row building. Not everything can be done with the tractor as far as machine addons, because the cost of this project keeps building up, so I've had to do a good amount on my own, even after the tractor does its thing. I hope I can get everything into the ground soon enough to settle before winter.

As far as the tiny seeds, I read somewhere that when you soak them, the sinkers are the viable seeds, and the floaters are basically empty seed shells. Can anyone verify?

We have freezing nights here well into June most years, but the irises start coming up in mid to late February. I'm wondering if it would be safe to plan on putting my new little seedlings into their outdoor beds after I see my older irises coming up -- providing the ground isn't frozen too hard to dig into... Any thoughts?

Lynn ~ I'll wait for someone with more experience on this matter as this will be my first year with iris seeds, and hopefully seedlings.

I would think if you are growing them inside they would have to be hardened off before putting them into a bed, unless you sow them outdoors in fall, and let them overwinter and let them come up naturally in the springtime.

I'll let others chime in.

I wouldn't put them out until the threat of frost is gone, you could put them out during the days and in a night when there is a threat of frost if they are left in pots.

Liz ~ What wonderful beds! It looks like you have a lot of work ahead of you. Can you get everything planted before the rains come? Or is it raining already???

Do you have your current irises in bags or pots?
