Sempervivum Love

I’m sure everyone has a favorite plant or two in their garden. However, it seems that people who grow Sempervivums tend to get carried away!

Chickification: Semp known for producing masses of chicks with short stolons, creating congested rosette proliferation.

Chicklets: alternate name for chicks.

Chicks: young sempervivum offsets produced at the end of stolons, to perpetuate and increase the colony.

De-chick: propagation act of harvesting all chicks on a hen and potting them up for early root development.

De-chicked: a semp that has had all its chicks removed for propagation.

Exsemplary: a revered state of semp gardening perfection with plant colonies showing incredible form and color.

Florachick: a chick-like growth that can occur on flowering hens, ambiguous growth might be a true chick or an axial flower stem.

Hen: mature sempervivum rosette that produces offsets (chicks) for increase.

Heuffs: short name for former Jovibarba heuffelii plants (now Sempervivum heuffelii), rosettes split rather than make chicks.

Jovs: what semperholics still call former Jovibarba species, now reclassified as within genus Sempervivum.

NOID: a sempervivum whose identity has been lost or is unknown, it has no ID. (alt case syntax: NoID)

Re-chicked: semps that grow a second round of chicks after being de-chicked.

Rollers: nickname for Sempervivum globiferum species & cultivars (former Jobibarba species) where chicks detach, roll around, and root.

Rotter: sudden collapse and rotting of a semp due to hot and humid weather and excess moisture.

Semp: short for Sempervivum, plural is "semps", commonly used term.

Semp jerky: Sempervivum that have been place bare root into nursery flats and stored in the dark garage for 7 months.

Semperenvy: a perpetual state of desperately wanting semps owned by others.

Semperfaction: a state of sublime pleasure when observing one's semp collection.

Semperfy: the tendency to plant too many sempervivums in a planter.

Semperglutton definition alphabetically: a semperholic so obsessed with semps they want every semp ever mentioned.

Semptitude: gardeners having strong opinions regarding semps

Sempervation: The sad and deprived state of having too small a collection of semp cultivars.

Sempervivumry: a garden, landscape, or potted plant area singularly devoted to growing semps.

Stolon: specifically for semps, a horizontal above-ground plant stem radiating from the hen, with chicks attached at the end.

Stoloniferous: specifically for semps, a plant having above-ground stolons with single chicks at the end for plant increase.

Whacking: a drastic surgical procedure of cutting off a dying flowering stem to attempt forcing regenerative chick growth.
