Ok - I have now lost 2 out of 2 Golden Zebras. Just wondering if others have had the same experience. Is this one not as hardy as some of the others?

Carolyn do not give up hope yet mine just started showing signs of life. For me all the Heucherella die down all the way in the winter but come back in the spring. I give them to the start of May to declare them dead.

One GZ was lost the year before, so I know that one was a goner. There isn't much there to come back for the second one, but I will wait - time will tell.

I planted a plug of GZ that arrived last fall and it has survived. Forgotten that I had it I bought another one to arrive first wk of May so if you want to try again, I'll send it to you. Maybe the third time's the charm.

I planted one last spring. Because I was concerned about it, I waited for it to get cold then mulched it fairly heavily. Because we didn't get any snow cover, over the course of the winter most of the mulch blew off, so I mulched it again this spring. It did work, as I have a fair amount of top growth coming up already. I don't love mulching, but I am willing to do it for some plants....maybe this is one of them.

I do mulch as well. I think it was probably the 100 degree days we had last summer. I lost more heuchs this year than in years with cold snowy winters.

We will see what happens this year.....

Oh I hope it is not a weak plant. I ordered one from Garden Crossings. I should get that order the end of the month.

Okay....Stupid question - Is a heucherella the same as a tiarella? I have (what I thought) a tiarella named Golden Zebra. I actually have 3 plugs that I bought last year and all of them seem to be struggling. My Pacific Coast (purchased from the same coop) is doing great, but GZ looks like it will be in the compost pile before long.

Hi Rose - A heucherella is a cross between a heuch and a tiarella. I think* I read in Dan Heims and Grahame's book, Heucheras and Heucherellas, that being sterile they are repeat bloomers. Kathy

Heucherella are crosses from Heuchera and Tiarellas. Heucherellas don't flower like the Tiarellas.

So, Golden Zebra is a touchy little thing no matter what kind it is! Thanks for the explanation!

I have a Heuchera Zebra Gold that didnt make it! Wonder if it is related to the Heucherella Zebra Gold?

Christine I think that is mislabeled. Please post a picture , as far as I know there is no Heuchera named Zebra Gold . I also did a search on it and found no results.

Hi Carolyn - Your GZ was shipped and here's the saga :

I am more than annoyed that @ 2:30 pm on Monday, 5/7, the mail carrier picked up a pkg of plants being shipped from DE to PA . If you go to USPS site https://tools.usps.com/go/Trac...
you will see that it was sitting around until 6:12 pm May 8 in Wilmington. So this priority mail pkg of plants going such a short distance is going to take 3 days. Let me know if plants are still living when they arrive.

Isn't the post office annoying??? Sometimes I think they purposely ship Priority slower!!!
