It might not be the neighbors at all. When I was a kid, we had a carrier pigeon be our "guest" for about a week. It stopped at our house, was totally friendly to us. Mom noticed the bands on it's legs & since it was so friendly, she picked him up & got the info off the bands. I don't know all of the details as I was only about 8 or 9 at the time but somehow from the info. on the bands, she was able to track down the owner of the bird. She called him on the phone & told him his bird was with us. We lived in south FL & he was several states to our north. Any way, he said that happens & the pigeon must have gotten blown off course in a storm & gotten exhausted. He was happy we were feeding him & said don't worry about him; that when he rests up enough then he will take flight, make several circles to get his bearings & then head in the direction of home.
Sure enough, 1 day he did exactly that & mom saw it happen. She called the man to tell him his bird was on the way home and he called us back in a few days & let mom know the pigeon had arrived safe & sound.
It was a totally cool & neat learning experience for all of us.

So cool! Maybe it's a good thing they didn't answer the door then, I would have been embarassed if they looked at me stupid. *Blush* I think he may have went on his way! I hope wherever his house is, he finds home.

Don't be embarrassed. He may well be the neighbors bird. I was just pointing out that he might not be too.

You are welcome Christine. I remember my mother running that down with every lead that she could. She must've made 15 or 20 phone calls to find out how you find out about tags on birds legs. From there she just kept pursuing until she found what she was looking for. Pretty awesome mom I had. Then again, I had a pretty awesome dad too. Like the time he brought home a little baby sparrow that had fallen out of the nest at work. And the time he brought home a little lamb.

I'm fine, Ann; thanks for asking. The weather here in Central Texas has been crazy: coolest April on record followed by the third hottest May. Virtually no rain during June, July or August combined with triple-digit temperatures. Keeping the gardens alive was a challenge. But now we've just broken the all-time record for the wettest September ever. I'm so happy to have the rains! The native flowers are blooming again, and I can almost hear the live oak trees sighing.
Fall has arrived and the cooler weather is a welcome relief. It feels so good to be outdoors now!

Looks like they are all filling & fattening up for migration.

We saw a really neat documentary of the Greater Sage-Grouse yesterday. A bird we in the southeast are completely unfamiliar with. Very cool! Play one of the vids & watch the males display. Hilarious!

bumplbea that is not a Robin. This is a Robin:

Your bird is a Spotted Towhee. See the difference?

Ann Thank You! for taking the time to post the links of birds showing pics of Robin next to the spotted towhee and actually see the difference. Same with the other links how similar these birds are. I will post the links in my favorites.
Now if I can keep the stellar Jays from raiding the cats food....they are similar to the western scrub blue jays. They are fast I'll see if I can get a picture of them .

You are so welcome. Thank you for the acorn!
I adore both the Stellers Jay and the western scrub Jay. Jay's do tend to steal food. They are very smart too.
