A Quick Seed Viability Test

By chelle

Not sure about your saved seeds' viability? A bit of water and a few seeds placed in a resealable plastic bag can be used to test for germination. Results are usually apparent in just a few days.

I have, yes.

Some of them got too cold outdoors and perished (I think), but most of them are from 2 to 6" tall by now. Some of the balsam impatiens are 10" tall already and we're still having frosty weather. I guess I should start pinching some of these seedlings back.

They are calling for cooler weather here too. My poor plants don't know what is going on...
I have a terrible time sowing seeds indoors but do pretty good with ones outside...

I just found a Cecily phlox sprout that by all rights should be dead. The container was feather-light; there really couldn't have been much (if any) moisture in there at all...plants just continue to be amazing, don't they? Smiling

Tell you what I did.
Here awhile back I started some tomato seeds in the Jiffy 7 pellets. I don't care for these things but I keep hoping I'll get to like them. some of the seeds came up and the ones that didn't I put in a little bucket. Put the bucket outside and gave up on them ever growing. I have the nicest little tomato out there. Ain't that something????

It truly is! I can't grow a thing in a jiffy pellet, Hilarious! not even so much as a weed. They're either bone dry, or sopping wet.

It's so nice to hear about your surprise tomato. Hurray!

I need to get some soaking pretty soon. I usually start them way too early, but now might be good.
