Been really busy with personal stuff and dealing with sick chickens last week. Haven't had much time to get on here. The roses are slowing down a bit. Mostly because I haven't gotten the deadheading done. But a few nice pics anyway... What an impressive array! Congratulations on the Quicksand bloom. Scandia and Susan Elizabeth are calling to me. I love the color blends. |

Beth, your rose parade is "Spectacular" ! Observe, observe, observe We are fortunate to "see" & appreciate nature in ways others are blind. |
I was so excited about all of these photos that I overlooked your sentence about the chickens. Are they okay now? |

Thanks guys! Zuzu, SUSAN ELIZABETH is a gorgeous rose, but she's highly susceptible to thrips, powdery mildew and B/S. I got her from Steve Singer many yrs ago. I have a niece name Susan Elizabeth, so had to have her. Steve told me sometime ago that all of them are virused, unfortunately. That's why he no longer has her. He asked me for cuttings a few yrs ago for someone who wanted her really badly, but that yr she had died back quite a bit and I don't know if what I sent him was good enough for him to bud. As for the chickies.... Two of them got sour crop. I had to drain their crops several times, and it's not fun! You can asphyxiate them if you do it wrong. I almost killed Elvira! And my favorite girl Frederika was hating me for days! We had to give them yogurt, probiotics, red wine & olive oil to try and get the good bacteria back to normal. They're fine now tho. What happened was my stupidity. I was dumping their poop and pine shavings that I clean out of the pen and coop everyday outside of the pen to compost it.. Well one day a couple months ago, they got out and I found them playing in the compost pile. At that point it was pretty well composted, and they just had a blast digging for bugs and then laying down in the stuff. We decided to let them out to play there a couple evenings a week. But they were having so much fun that we decided to enclose that area along the pen and let them out every evening for a few hours. Well, I stupidly was continuing to dump the poop and pine shavings out there, and apparently it wasn't a good idea to let them play in the fresh stuff. I knew that, but I was hoping it wasn't going to be a problem. Learned the hard way, that's for sure! I really shoulda known!! My husband raked it all out and spread it around the roses in the bed just below there and now I put it in another spot outside the enclosure! We put in rice straw for them to play in now and they just love it! Shredded the whole big bale within a couple days. I rake it around and make big piles for them to dig around in and kick apart. It's fun to watch them. They get so excited when they get out that they stretch their wings up and flap them and do a sort of wiggly dance! Their a bunch of goofballs!! ![]() |
