Seed pods for something. What did the rest of the plant look like?

Found among my ferns, are they pods for my ferns? I thought ferns didn't have seeds

They're not in water, just a vase. Ferns come up from fiddle heads in the spring. Not. Sure what these are.

Tekla, you say in the subject line that they were found among your ferns. Do you know what type of ferns you have? Can you upload a photo of the ferns as well as another photo in brighter light, of those stems in the vase?

I don't know what kind of ferns they are, I transplanted them from an old garden. I'll try to send a better more clear photo tomorrow.

Some sort of Fertile Fronds of ferns, some ferns produce sterile and fertile parts in different fronds. sush as sensitive ferns (Onoclea sensibilis), or other genera/species

I'm sure there may be many types of ferns that grow in N.J. but for comparison check out these photos of seed pods from Sensitive Fern (Onoclea sensibilis)
