More info:
Stems are turning woody at the bottom
New leaf growth is red tinged at edges
Inner stem is reddish
Leaves are not glossy

I got the answer (Ardisia) from another source!
I can't figure out how to delete my initial post but maybe someone else will be curious in the answer

I've had two different types of Ardisia over the years and it does resemble Ardisia:
