I have a CAMERA Question.
My Canon G 16 keeps giving me "Card error" message.
Background facts, I carry the camera in a pocket and take 100 photos a day approx.
The card is constantly going in and out of the card slot in the camera.
The camera is used vertically and horizontally and turned and flipped as I go thru the garden.
Most times the error message comes when I need to photo .
I have ordered a new card in hopes that is the problem and not a "tired slot " issue.

Does the card work fine in your card reader/computer?

How worn are the contacts on the card?

I am hoping it is a worn card. It seems to be fine in the card reader which makes me suspect it is the fault of the camera slot.
The card get a lot of action as I delete all images after a photo session.
New card arrives tomorrow.

Do not put all your eggs into one basket. You should have more than one card. Many smaller cards are much better than one large card. Things break, get lost, get stolen, get left at home. I suggest a min. of 3 cards. I own about 17. Gene

I rarely take my camera anywhere but my garden.
I am too old to be as active as someone who has a high level social life.
When my new card's come I should be all set with three.
Thanks for the tip.

I wore out the card reader slot in my computer putting the card in and out all the time. So now I use the cord that came with the camera to load the photos into the computer. I found the good thing about that is I am never have to take my card out, so I don't
arrive at the garden with no card in the camera which happened a lot before. I delete all photos on the card while still in the camera after each session. I leave the cord plugged into the computer, then when I come in I just plug it into the camera, once the photos are loaded I unplug the cord from the camera, delete the photos and I am ready to go again.

Memory cards are important. IMO, not a time or place to save a few pennies. Only buy brand name cards. Cheap cards can cause lot of problems. Most of mine are Transcend.

Larry, plugging the camera into the computer is a big no-no. Get a card reader. Faster, more reliable, lasts longer, etc. Here's a great one.

Being the camera came with the cord, I have to ask why it would be a big no-no, when it has worked fine for 2 years? It is not like I have thousands of photos to download at a time, I could see that might make a big difference and a fast card reader would be needed if I had a ton of photos on the card. Normally I have no more than about 50 photos at a time, and that only takes a few seconds.
Being so absent minded now, I have found it saves me a lot of time going back and forth from the garden to the house to retrieve a card.

Just because they gave you a cord does not mean it is a good idea to use it. If they had not and the competition supplied one, you might have bought a different camera. Silly. I get about 3 emails a year from a former student: I know you told me not to but I plugged my camera into my computer and now the camera/computer does not work. You have been lucky so far. Do not push your luck. Get a card reader !! I am speaking from many years of experience and trying to help you. But, human nature being what it is I know you will just continue to do what seems to work for you. Sigh. Gene

Are you saying the camera or the computer would be damaged by the connection, or that it is just the normal problems with usb drivers and updates not being compatible or out of date?

Read this forum all the time. Didn't know about the card reader. Buying one today.
My camera has this card Lexar Professional 633x. Should I buy the same one or the Transcend?

If the camera or computer is damaged by the physical connection, then that is a failure to meet certain standards (and if you're lucky enough to still be under warranty, should most definitely be covered). This should NEVER happen if both the computer and camera manufacturers have followed the USB spec.

Usually problems with this kind of direct connection are due to driver incompatibility (on the computer end) or the computer doing weird things to the camera's file system (and hence causing issues on the camera end).

Lexar are good cards except if you are using a Canon camera. Compatibility issues big time.

Besides photography and house plants, I also teach classes about computers. Mostly keeping them running smoothly and free from bad things. Before you connect your valuable camera to your computer let me ask you if you can guarantee your computer is 100% free of any bots, spam, viruses, etc. My guess is you cannot. Trust me, you cannot. Take the card out of your camera, put it into a card reader, attach the card reader to your computer. Manually (do not allow any software to take over at this point) cut/copy your pictures to a folder of your choosing. Simple, safe, easy, quick. I have a card reader in each vehicle, one in my bag where I carry my computer to my classes and 3 in my desk drawer. Get the one I indicated. Yes, there are unreliable card readers out there. Gene

Sandisk and Lexar are the top 2 brands of memory cards. Kingston and Transcend are just as good but less expensive. Almost all my cards are Transcend. Hint, hint. I had a nice and expensive Lexar card and went to suck out my images and - nope. I contacted Lexar and they sad - yes, we have a bug. Send us your card. 2 week later I got my card back. Shot hundreds of pix. Nope again. Lexar says they have a bug in their fix. 2 weeks later I got my card back again. Lost another 500 pix. Goodbye Lexar. Googled it and Lexar and Canon have compatibility issues sometimes. Not worth a gamble. I have shot approx. 1 million pictures onto Transcend cards with no issues of any kind. Gene

Either 64gb or 32gb are fine. Class 10 if SD cards. I have about 1TB in cards and my largest is 64gb. I buy my cards from either Amazon or Newegg.
