I sold my house in the country a couple of years ago, but at this time of year I would put my lawn mower on a high setting and run over all the piles of leaves in my yard. During the summer I would run the lawn mower without the catch bag so that the grass clipping spread out over the lawn. However, in the fall I would attach the catcher bag so that I could gather up all the shredded leaves and just dump them in the compost pile. I'm not totally convinced that the shredding helped, but I had a lot of fun thinking that it did.
